I'm picking up 2 5850's tomorrow. Seems to be the best price/performance ATM.

I don't see why the power consumption is such a big deal. The card will be running idle most of the times anyway. And at idle, there's only a ~20W difference between the 480 and the 5870. The few hours of maxed out load won't make a huge difference on the power bill. Get a more efficient refrigerator, LCD TV or vacuum cleaner if you really care about power savings and make a difference
Yup I for one wouldn't take that into consideration when choosing a 500 video card. SLI GTX 480 looked pretty sweet! Too bad a little thing called life keeps me from pouring that much money into this hobby. You're gonna have an awesome rig with that combination and your i7 980x.

As for Hell_of_Doom's change of heart, my theory is that the shock of fermi not outperfoming the competition by a minimum of 50% in every game got his already messed up head messed up and the messes then took each other out and now he's normal. Really tiread right now from waiting on the NDA to lift - it's 4am here right now.

Power consumption means nothing to me and shouldn't to anyone who is going to spend $500 US on a video card.

I was also impressed with the Metro benchmarks. This game is a total system hog in 3D, so I'd need either a 5870 or 480 minimum.

It's not the power bill I'd be concerned about. Heat has to go somewhere. It either festers inside your case and warms your components or it's exhausted into your gaming area while you sit there and sweat it out. And for guys like me who watercool, it's all dumped into your loop and dispersed among all your components. Every component in the case is impacted by it in some way, and in a lot of ways it negates the advantages of watercooling in the first place by heating up your entire loop.

In addition, it just represents inefficiency when there's already a competing card on the market that runs much cooler. By comparison, it's excess, unnecessary heat.

But.. that's just my position. I know that you have your reasons for going with Fermi, and I hope they're great cards for you.

This ^^

I don't care about power consumption either but I do care about heat and in this instance, how much heat 2 cards will dump into my case.

An AC unit for the new apartment was on my list anyway for this summer
Cool deal. Be sure to post some benches when you get the cards. I can imagine the excitement you feel after waiting for Nvidia to release their new hardware.

I'd be particularly interested in seeing how they handle 3D if you get into it. That's something that I'll be keeping an eye on in the future.

I am some what disappointed, performance to price wise. Yeah the GTX470 wins most of time against a HD5850 by a little bit but the asking price premium of 100 or ($150) is simply not worth it. For that amount you can get a HD5870 which smokes it. Although not a Geforce FailX card it does seem pretty bad, the low efficentcy, price and heat is a put off.

My post from another thread
Quote:
Man I couldn't wait to get home today in hopes of a great read. But to me it's quite disappointing. the 480 looks great at lower resolutions compared to the 5870 but once you get to 25x16 its not much difference. not worth the trade off that's for sure.

I mean you talk about SLI scaling is great but ****...

you can get tri-fire 5870s cheaper then 480s sli and still consume less energy.

I used to not care about how much heat video cards put out until I got my 5870 and realized how much cooler my room temperature is.

I'd still like to see 5760x1080 Res Benchmarks to see which plays multi monitor gaming better.

Then ill add:

man I was wondering when the card would stop getting louder on Hards review.

It's funny when another company can boost the sales of its competitor by reviling new products.

Sad thing is ATI will have its next line of cards out 2-4 months after 480 ships any decent quantities.
