If you are using a Pentium 4 3GHz, passing the equivalent of -lavdopts skiploopfilter=all:fast to vlc should fix your playback problems. Note that the H.264 software decoder's performance has increased significantly (>10%) lately, so if you manage to update vlc's libavcodec, that will also help.
