With 480's Updated Drivers?

I haven't heard much about the HD5000 series already having optimized drivers.

And when the GTX480 gets optimized drivers, aren't the Benchmark results going to sway heavily in favor of the GTX480?

For the sake of fairness, what if the HD5000 series were bench-marked on their first version drivers, and performance was compared with the GTX480's with its best optimized updated drivers from say 30 to 60 days from now?

Yeah there's no doubt that fermi performance will get better with newer drivers, there is no way of knowing how much better.

This is why day 1 benchmarks don't really mean that much and lot of people know it. The GTX 480 outperformed the 5870 no question about that, but people are more concerned with the amount of heat it dissipates. While the performance is going to increase with time the heat, noise and power-consumption are going to pretty much stay the way they are.

Doubt we'll see anything close to a 30% improvement. Nvidia's drivers are always very good at launch day and I don't think we've ever seen that kind of an improvement from either company.

Doesn't getting a case with four fans... three 230mm fans (Top,Side, and Front) and a smaller one to suck it out the back... solve the heat issue?

That is my plan. And the GTX480 is doing me a favor; because with a case like that I'll really be ready for a System upgrade to i7. In about six to nine months.

I've been waiting a long time to get the best of cooling cases.

And an 80+ Gold PSU can help with saving power. Right? And improve performance too.

I need one of those too. I've had my eyes on the best 80+ Gold PSU money can buy for over six months!

I wouldn't bet on anything like 30% either.
I'd expect perhaps 10-15% over time (on average in all the games in care about), anything above that would be an unexpected bonus

Bee_Dee_3_Dee I can hear you like Nvidia, as do many of us. But your insistance of them having to be the best doesn't change reality however. ATI pretty much won this round. If I were building a new top gaming system today, I'd be with a 5970 or a couple of 5850's, not 480GTX. I don't expect this to change with upcoming drivers. A refresh of 480GTX might change it, but that's still to see how it behaves..

Only 480GTX SLI could be viable, not from a price/power drain/temperature standpoint, but purely from a performance standpoint. But ~700W for 480GTX SLI, really?

But you say you'll buy in 6-9 months, and who knows what Nvidia and ATI has launched at that point. No need to worry about graphicscard now if that's the timeplan

Everyone that bought the GTX295 when it got released managed to get there hands on an updated driver within one week that improved performance in Crysis:Warhead 30%. That was sooo cool.
