Default Hang at X start with 195.36.15 driver

Hi,

We've just set up a couple of new Alienware Aurora desktops with RHEL 5 and the latest driver. Both machines hang as soon as X is started with this driver. Rolling back to the 190.53 driver seems to avoid the hang.

I've attached a bug report that was generated after a reboot following a hang. Hopefully it's useful.

Can you SSH into the system while it's in the hung state? If so, could you please try running "startx" from an SSH session and seeing what it prints out?

No, I did try, but the system is totally unresponsive.

Hmm, okay. In that case, could you please boot to a text console, then run these commands from an SSH session:
Code:
  mount -o remount,sync /
  startx -- -verbose 6
With any luck, this will log something useful before the system freezes.

Hi,

as mentioned in the other thread about a similar problem, it is possible to capture dmesg output by ssh-ing to the target machine *before* starting X, then entering the following commands in time before ssh freezes completely:

Code:
cat /dev/nvidia0
dmesg > dmesg.log
If "cat /dev/nvidia0" doesn't return after 1-2 seconds, you can safely pause it with Ctrl+Z or kill it with Ctrl+C, so that you have a chance to enter the second command.

I hope this helps.

@AaronP: Here's another report after remounting in sync mode. Note that the Xorg.0.log.old file in that report is from a run with the 190.53 driver, while the Xorg.0.log is what was captured with the 195.36.15 driver before the lock-up.

@bactrimel: The machine freezes almost immediately after starting X. I don't think I could get the commands entered in time. The best I could probably do is have a script capturing the dmesg output continuously while I run startx from runlevel 3, and just hope that there is an intact file with useful info when I reboot...

Thank you, that got farther. Bactrimel is right, it looks like it's freezing as soon as it tries to initialize the GPU. The logical next step is to set up netconsole or a serial console to try to catch any errors from the kernel, but there have been a couple of reports of very similar problems recently that are getting looked at, so there's a chance it might be fixed in the next release.
