I'm thinking about getting a GT240 for Physx to go along with my GTX-285. If you do use a 285 for Physix I would love to know what difference it makes.

There is not a game it would make a difference in "currently".

Batman AA Min Frame rate is the same using a GTX285 vs 8800GT as a physx only proccessor.

The GTX285 is Twice as powerful as the 8800GT in physx but only if you can even get a game to use 100% of its power. (AKA there is none)

Nvidia's own Physx Demos on the other hand are different and do allow 100% use of the video card for Physx.

Even Fluidmark is written to only take advantage of about 36% of the GPU's full power.
* The strange thing about Fluidmark is that the utilization is the same 36% with the 8800GT or the GTX285, allowing the GTX285 to still double the score of the 8800GT.

I have the highest score on their page using the GTX285 at the 1920X1200 test.

The bigger question about Physx games are that which games do actually use GPU for some of the effects and which do everything with CPU like they would with Havoc.

Aliens: Colonial Marines is still in development, it was confirmed last month.

APB is pretty well known.

Backbreaker should also be AAA title.

There are other games with GPU PhysX support in development, but NDA is in place. Look at Mafia II for example.

Yes, That is the bigger question.

To throw out some random numbers at the question: A 9600GT thats second up there, has a theoretical peak of 312 Gflops(lower in actual use) and as you say, hits 36% utilization. This ends up at about 100 Gflops, theoretically. A quad core intel CPU, at 3.2 GHZ has a theoretical peak of 96 Gflops(lower in actual use). If you could use the whole CPU, and the code was properly tuned to a CPU, you could probably run similar Physx on a intel quad. However, you couldn't use all 4 cores. At best, you could use 2 cores. So cut that in half.

So, theoretically by the numbers, a 8 core CPU could probably run Physx equal to what GPUs do now on 4 cores. Maybe a 6 core could on 4 cores with 2 for the rest of the system. Physx isn't nearly as demanding as NV makes it out to be, thats all for show.

Edit: Indeed, digging a little more out of boredom, the lowest supported Physx card is a 8600 GT, which has a theoretical peak of only 114 Gflops, including the "missing MUL" of that series of cards. Actual peak theoretical rates would be about 76 Gflops, 20 Gflops below a quad core Intel or AMD CPU.

All of them.

Ninja Prime - First of all, it's not just about theoretical flops... Also a 9600GT card costs probably around 70 bucks now. Almost everyone has 2 PCI-E slots now. How many people have or are going to buy a 6-8 core CPU in the upcoming years? Right. Not that demanding you say?

A quad core that can match the 76 Gflops I said above is only $90. NV is just suppressing CPU Physx in order to make their GPU's look better.
