Hmm..Not sure I completely agree, DX11 and Tess come to mind, but yeah....it's not a huge upgrade.

it is "huge" upgrade since you won't have to worry about multi-GPU profiles, no possible scalling issues.

I already upgraded in November last year but voted will buy ATI, since I believe that describes the situation better.

For me upgrading to GTX 480 is not an option since in my case it is downgrade.
The ONLY option for me upgrading with NVIDIA cards would be getting 2x GTX 480 at about $1000 (if lucky).
Would also need to buy new mobo, NVIDIA is recommending to run the GTX 480 SLI on slot 1 and 3 (read here), not possible on my setup and i would most likely also need water-cooling.

All together about $2000 upgrade so the bottom line is NO thank you, waiting for the next round.

The above definitely doesn't mean to say that the GTX 480 is bad upgrade for some people. What ever you buy I hope you can enjoy and happy gaming.

Dont see why you would have to upgrade as you could use slots 1 and 3 unless the supplied SLI connector is a short one. And those can be had for less than 20 bucks. Which leaves water cooling, dangerden.com, I'd say an upgrade would be closer to 1500 than 2g.

Still too expensive tho. $$$$$ is why I voted no, and heat. Noise is a non issue for me.

No chance. Right now my GTX 285 is just about hanging in there, but the cost of the 4xx range, combined with the power requirements and sheer heat produced makes them very unattractive.

It's possible nvidia will refresh the parts in the next 6-9 months or so, reducing power usage and maybe increasing performance a little, but by then I'd imagine the 58xx refresh to be out to counter that.

When I find my GTX 285 doesn't cut it any more, I'll more than likely be buying a 5850 or 5870.

I'd also been considering a second GTX 285 instead, but would require a stronger PSU as well as the card, so whilst it might be a little faster than the 5870, it'd cost just as much total and use more power, thus producing more heat.

Yes that is the board. I can't run double slot card in slot 3. I don't like water cooling so I would try the mobo upgrade first. Something like ASUS Rampage III Extreme, soon to be out. The water-cooling would be the last resort most likely not only to keep the heat down but also the noise.

I didn't upgrade to HD 5870 CrossFire for exactly the same reason and most likely I could have run the cards on slot 1&2 some people do and have no problem. Some people actually run 3x 5870 cards site by site without problem.

Was waiting for the HD 5970 even though it's slower than the 5870 Crossfire.

For me single card is definitely a better choice. Also have ATI TV Wonder 650 PCI E, which leaves me with one spare PCI E single card slot, on the present ASUS Rampage II Extreme setup.

I might upgrade storage drives to SATA 3, in that case I need PCI E slot for this without buying new mobo. I do prefer not to buy new mobo until Intel gets the new SATA 6Gb and USB 3 chip-set, most likely not till Q1 2011.

I can run double slot in 3 with my case, Thats what I think I should do, two 480's in slot 1 and 3

There's a lot of fanboy accusations flying around here. But I think the majority of everyone here knows that primarily this site has nvidia fans (why else would you join a site called nvnews [besides an ati user who wants to troll but they'd get banned pretty fast]). And yet a lot of people here have switched to ATI or are possibly planning on it. Just nvidia users are let down... if not by the performance, the price. I think the premium nvidia is demanding for the 480 is too much. And while the 470 falls comfortably in its place, I was willing to spend a little bit more to get a 5870 (actually I had a coupon code so I was basically able to get one for around the same price).

If the 480 were more competitively priced I think there'd be less defectors. Anyway my point is when it boils down to it, it has nothing to do with fanboyism but rather people just trying to get the best bang for the buck.

As the owner of a pair of HD5970's since last november,the obvious answer is no of course.


I got enough problems actually extracting all the performance on the cards as it is,since i am using a single i7 920 CPU clocked at 4Ghz,trying to keep 4 of these GPU's busy,and it simply isn't enough,even though the performance is already impressive as it is.


So next up for me is when Intel release a more affordable version of the 6 core gulftown processor,which rumours suggest is coming in Q3,supposedly it'll be called the i7 970 processor with a locked multiplier and running at 3.2Ghz by default....Hopefully it'll cost around 600$,roughly the same as the current i7 960 processor.
