But how user-friendly is it? This laptop is going to a kid at the age of 10 so something similar to XP would be preferred. Working a bit faster after disabling ipv6. Still slow though.

EDIT: Really liking the new look of ubuntu! A bit slow on my current crappy laptop, but am seriously considering installing this on my main comp.

Well, you can just install xfce4 or LXDE(lighter weight DE's) from the Software Centre and then login to whatever you want via the login screen. Onces you've installed them, just login out and pick one from the session option once you've pressed your user name.

Just remember it's still beta though. What exactly is slow? If your internet is slow, you can use OpenDNS and put the details in the network manager. https://store.opendns.com/setup/operatingsystem/ubuntu

It's getting faster as I progress, but everything at this point is pretty slow. Chrome really helped out with the net-browsing! It takes pretty long to open the tabs in the upper left corner, but once an app is open it performs surprisingly well.

EDIT: What's the proper way of installing flash on linux so that it doesn't run like a two legged dog?

Flash runs slower in Linux thanks to Adobe's amazing support.

Usually it should prompt you in Firefox when something Flash is playing or you can look for it in the Software Centre.

You don't need to install a whole new distro just to try another desktop environment. Just install them from the software centre.

Too late for that too, already installing Windows XP as the flash player didn't work smoothly on Lubuntu either. Everything else worked pretty well though and I must say I'm a bit surprised as I expected a lot of hardware incompatibilities. Too bad he needs flash support. Html 5 didn't work too well either.

flash is okay, but i have only used it on newer pc's with ubuntu and its variants. it's no secret that flash in linux is a little shady.
