Default can't understand why X fails with nvidia

distro: Gentoo with devfs running
chipset is nforce2, card is geforce4 MX

My only clue is the before failing X says

NV: can't load /dev/nvidiactl (no such file or directory)(doesn't seem to be in the log file although it IS in the error message when X fails.)
oh, and
can't load /dev/apm_bios(no such file or directory)

modules.conf has the lines:
alias char-major-10-175 agpgart(shouldn't matter)
alias char-major-195 nvidia
alias /dev/nvidiactl char-major-195

I htought maybe devfs wasn't mounted or devfsd wasn't running, but I have thouroughly check these and both are started at boot.

heres portions of my XF86Config:

I know this is not of much help, but I do have a /dev/nvidiactl, so it's obviously something that's supposed to be there

What kernel do you run? I have also got this error message in XFree86 log since installing kernel 2.6. Everything's working fine though, I don't think it's this one that's your problem.

# uname -r
2.4.20-gentoo-r7

I am having problems in general with the nvidia hardware not playing nicely with devfs

i am using "nv" video driver and "i810" audio drivers for the integrated sound.

Maybe 2.6 is the answer... but I hate to recompile the kernel... so many NEW things can go wrong.

Any Idea how to GET /dev/nvidiactl and /dev/nvidia/0 into devfs?
