Hard to tell without trying. Even the same PSU models can perform differently. Every PSU has a slightly different built tolerance.

Come on NVIDIA, where are those release 256 drivers with support for 3D Surround? I just ordered two more Acer GD235HZ 3D monitors off Newegg. Free 3-day shipping, so I had to take advantage.

Damn, the shortages are so annoying. I miss the 8800 day when you can just walk into a store or go online and get as many cards as you'd like.

Looks likes the tide of public opinion has really turned on Fermi the last couple of days. The 5870s were hot commodities just last month but now the 2gb cards are readily available everywhere while the 4XX remained sold out. Unless you're gaming at 2650x1600 where NV drivers are still kinda weak, getting the 480 instead of the 2gb 5870 is a no brainer.

I really regret not pulling the trigger on 2 EVGA 480s on Tigerdirect last week. Guess I'm just gonna have to stick with the less demanding stuff like DX9 console ports and Bad Company 2 until I can get a hold of the 480s.

I was apprehensive about temps until I started seeing positive end user feedback. After seeing some trusted users results, there was no way I was missing out.

These really are excellent cards. I'm very happy with them

There are 5 EVGA 480's available here in the US for only $105 over MSRP.I would go ahead and get my 2 now but I would really like to pay MSRP if not at least a bit closer.Gonna give my amazon pre-order another week or so.

Early results are 1483 shader, so that's about 742 on the core. I have not found my max on my memory yet and was content to test @ a flat 1850 (3700). I'll update when I do. I tested both cards in my i7 rig so the CPU and memory would be identical.

STALKER: CoP

The settings for both cards run 1

The results run 1

HD 5870 @ 1000|1275

GTX 470 @ 742|1850

The settings for both cards run 2

The results run 2

HD 5870 @ 1000|1275

GTX 470 @ 742|1850

I was actually angry when I was done running this bench. The 470 is much more fluid in this bench than the 5870 and certainly moreso than triple HD 5870 Crossfire that puts up better than twice its averages. I will stress again, that's with AA. The ATi card(s) are equally fluid sans AA. FPS does not reflect this, you have to see it to believe it.

This OCed 470 feels darn solid and fluid, an OCed 480 must really be something. If you can afford the 480, get that sucker.

Stock idle in a closed SilverStone case with all system fans on low.

I'm going to drop some Shin-Etsu X23-7783D on my card this weekend.

Yeah, your experiences confirm exactly my own with the 5870s. They simply don't perform as smoothly as their numbers will lead one to believe. IMO, reviewers simply don't state this enough. I remember hearing the same things from some users with regards to the 4870s vs 280s. My hunch is that the ATI cards just don't have enough bandwidth once you start using 4xAA at 1920x1200 with graphically intensive games. If it's a framebuffer issue, the 2gb cards should have shown much bigger improvements than they did.
