My Thermaltake Toughpower 1000w arrived today and I finally have my PC back-up. This PSU is plenty enough to drive two GTX 480's and my GTX 260.

Now that I've had some time to play with these 480's they are wonderful. It's nice to play Metro 2033 with all the bells and whistles turned on. It's even playable with Advanced DOF (I am running SLI though). I am very pleased, and very happy with this investment.

Temperature doesn't seem to be too big of a deal. The hottest GPU is in the middle slot and it peaked at 95 C, and I have a rather small case. Note: I run my GPU fans at 100% all the time.

Attached a screenshot of my idle temps after about an hour of Metro 2033. Seems to be stable at these temps when idle.

EDIT: After playing Metro 2033 for several hours I checked my temps and the 480 in the middle slot was up to 95 C, ouch. No problems though.

UPS dropped off my EVGA GTX 470 today, it's replacing my BFG GTX 260 OC.
Not much to say really, installation was a breeze.
As for the heat and noise issue, I'm completely happy with how it worked out.
I set up a profile with the fan at 75%, which is the point it becomes noticeable, and ran Kombustor until the temp leveled out, which was at 75C. This was at stock clocks.
I had considered going red with a 5870 after reading the reviews but I'm glad I stuck with Nvidia, I simply like the feature set available as far as AA modes, etc.

I remember hearing the same things from some users with regards to the 4870s vs 280s. My hunch is that the ATI cards just don't have enough bandwidth once you start using 4xAA at 1920x1200 with graphically intensive games. If it's a framebuffer issue, the 2gb cards should have shown much bigger improvements than they did.
I have no idea what is up. 5870s have bandwidth.

Either memory interface size matters in some hidden way I don't understand with AA, or we are dealing with a driver issue. I have a hard time believing the extra 280 or so ram on the 470 is accounting for what I am seeing, and that's another possibility. It could be all three.

I returned one of my 5870s to ZZF for a refund, and sold the other. I will be dropping the remaining one in my alt rig. I'll likely pick up another 470 soon. I care about smooth FPS @ 1920x with AA, not "winning" a bench by 5FPS in averages. I like solid mins and steady FPS, I'll take 34/55 over 20/70 any day of the week. I'm more impressed with this OCed 470 than I thought I would be.

A neighbor of mine let me try 3d vision on his rig and I liked that a lot. There's a good chance I may do that too. I was always down on it and being skeptical, until he talked me into trying it.

I tried 2 hours of Crysis all VH @ 1920x1200 stock last night to establish a baseline for temps. In a closed case with system fans on low and the GPU fan @ auto I hit 85C. The fan went up to 53%. Tonight I am going to run my OC with 65% fan speed set manually and see what happens. This weekend the stock TIM is going to be replaced with Shin-etsu. Usually the factory applies too much and uses a rather standard grade.

I picked up two 480 GTX at Newgg. Cards got charged but the orders are still shown to be in processing on Newegg. I hope they go through. It's been really chaotic. A lot of the folks at EVGA were reporting that they got notified about voided orders after having gone through the sales successfully. IT seems like things are happening faster than Newegg's system or crew can handle.

+1

I always wait a little while. Price comes down plus I don't have to deal with voided order crap.

I agree that limited supply has to do with the craze. How else can you explain the success of the WII? LOL

In terms of price, the 470s should be a lot more inviting for most gamers yet the demand is a lot smaller. It was kinda the same way with the 5970. The more people see it selling out quickly the more they wanna get it.

Ordered a couple of the evga ones so waiting and i bet nvidia will drop support for the 200 series once these are mainstream.

They pulled this with the FX and 6 series and i bet nvidia will leave people behind with the 200
