Fermis all over the place

Well, take your pick. Head over to Zipzoomfly, Newegg, and Tiger Direct for all the Fermis you want. It seems the supply is getting a LOT better. I'm sure Charlie D. at SemiAccurate will be happy to hear that. Of course his beloved ATI has a lot more HD 5870s around. Unfortunately, you'll still have to pay an inflated price for that Fermi, but I can tell you that the card is the REAL DEAL! Yep, it can get pretty hot, but it is NOT loud, even when the fan is at 70%. Any high performance card will make noise under load, but the GTX 480 is nowhere near as loud as reviewers suggest.

+1, this is EXACTLY what I think. There are a number of people that do think however that its just loud, loud, loud, even when their rigs are off. But yeah at 70% or under no big deal and little besides Furmark seems to drive them that hard.

Now at 100% running Furmark, yes, very loud. As Maxwell Smart would say, "That's the SECOND loudest GPU I've ever heard." The 7800 GTX 512 is still king of the loudest GPU I've ever owned.

I dunno, I bought my Gigabyte GTX 480 for $499 Friday from Newegg. MSRP is $499.

And yea, its not loud.

I think I've decided that I'll be buying a 480 if I can get one for $450 after Bing Cash Back or a rebate.

Definitely getting a 480. Or maybe 2 470s in SLI. Would 1 480 beat SLI 470s?

SLI 470s would be faster, but obviously it'd be hotter, much more power hungry and much more expensive, with less video memory available... plus you'd be using SLI, which itself is a downside compared to using a single GPU.

I'd just go with a single 480, ensure that its properly cooled and then overclock the crap out of it. Then just use your other PCI-E slot for a decent Physx card if necessary.

I'd like to guess that its about as loud as a GTX 285? I know damn well that my temps get really high and I've had both my 9800 GTX and GTX 285 at 100% fan speed while folding and its definetly a sound to be reckoned with.

It should be obvious to the reviewers that these cards are loud because they have to be, but only at 100% fan speed and not much worse (if at all) than the last generation. My 285 peaks at 100% fan speed during almost every game, regardless of temps. It's a loud I can deal with...

lol doesn't help that we don't have the option of SLI with our boards....

I've been looking at another board to get SLI and scoop up a GTX 285 since they're getting so cheap now, but I love this darn gigabyte board

I wouldn't bother upgrading this platform. This is about as good as Socket 775 gets IMO.

Yes, the 480's fan is quieter than the 5870 at the same speeds but it could go much higher. On a single card setup, it won't matter but if you place another card for SLI or PhysX under a 480, the temps rise way up. On my setup, 1 card will often go up to 90% in order to keep the temp around 90C or so. At 90%, the 480 is way louder than whatever speed my 5870 ran at.

its hard to call the gtx 480 loud or hot when just a little bit of good airflow can make a huge difference.
if that exposed aluminum is near a case fan, i dont think the intrinsic fan would spin up that much.

I have very good air flow in my case. My 480 fan never exceeds 60%, even after an hour of gaming. It idles at 48 degrees at 44% fan speed. I'm very impressed with mine. It is certainly quieter than my previous 280.
