Also , it seems to have that feel about it, (like windows 7),that it is not going to break.

Lucid Lynx is Ubuntu 10.04.

I heard there was a show-stopper bug on release

I almost installed it on Tuesday before I heard about it. I want to run it from my flash-drive if possible. I picked up a 4GB flash drive to boot it off of. If it is good enough, I'll move it to my HTPC.

I'm using Squeeze as well, and Debian is always a rock solid OS The stable branch software is too old IMO.

Fedora is kinda hit and miss to me, and I'm not a big fan of rpm based distros (me and fedora have a tough love since version 2).

EDIT: and synaptic is WAY better than yumex.

Show stopper bug was fixed in the last moment before release, thats why there was delay, it runs fine here and on six other PCs I have installed so far.

Just for info to all who are interested, I have updated again and no problems found.
There is something a wee bit good about using this software, can't put my finger on it. Liking it a lot.
I could use this no problem. Does everything I need a system to do.

How do i use the equivalent of start>run>winver

EDIT answered my own question

You are using Ubuntu 9.10
- the Karmic Koala - released in October 2009 and supported until April 2011.

I'm just giving Lucid 10.04 a test run and seems fine so far. I'm switching distros a lot just lately.

Anyone use Last.FM? They have a native client for Linux which is pretty sweet. It's in the repos.

What a terrible state i have got myself into. It began trying to install Ubuntu 10.04, it installs ok , but leaves in the boot menu two entries for Ubuntu and one for windows 7, The Ubuntu ones don't work and the message says that i should start a repair to fix windows.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled windows tried again with Ubuntu to no avail. same deal as before.
BTW i have one terrabyte drive and one 160 gig drive. I had been trying to install on the 160gb one.

The only way i have gotten it working is by unplugging the 160gb drive and installing Ubuntu on the main drive.
However , I'm not out of the woods yet. NO windows 7 entry in boot loader, just no boot loader just boots straight to Ubuntu.

I know I am doing something daft but I'm stuck. Help me please.

btw i have done this lots before with previous Linux install without issue.
