Ok i know this is a nvidi based fan site and ive always had nvidia cards but it seems like ATI have brought out some killer GFX cards in the past few months.
Put asid the Name(Nvidia/ATI) .. Of the GTX 470 or HD 5870 witch of the two hase the pure power? ... Witch has more bang? I have a chance to upgrade in the next month and im not sure if i sould stick with Nvidia or swapp to ATI ... Both cards i have in my sites(GTX 470 & HD 5870)are both £314. Without being bias against either brand witch has the most sheer power?

HD5870 over 470
I went from HD5870 to GTX 480. Having some driver issues currently, now I gotta wait this crap out. The HD5870 is faster than the 470 and the drivers for the HD5870 are much more mature. |

470! Performs like 5870, and has great oc scaling.

For pure power? Definitely 5870. Cheaper over here too, so a much better deal. Not sure how prices are in the US.

depends on how you use it.
With a DX11 game, the gtx 470 will probably be a bit faster. In a dx10/dx9 game, the 5870 will be faster. The 5870 uses significantly less power as well. Sticking with a gtx 470 can be a fruitful investment though. Typically, they are cheaper than a 5870, so the choice isn't this difficult to make. Personally, I would take the gtx 470, despite it's relatively poor energy efficiency, for the dx11 performance. Oh, and if you play at over 1900x1200, ATI cards handle that better for some reason. In this case, the 5870 would be better.

Definitely 5870.
Uses less power, and is more powerful (in most cases)

You play a lot of AoC, yes?
I've compared the 470 and 5870 @ stock in that title. Here's a very demanding wide shot near Kesh, 4xAA|16xAF all on or enabled/max @ 1920x. I use DX9 because 10 is somewhat buggy regardless of card used. 470 = 42FPS http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/4290/aoc470.jpg 5870 = 36.6FPS http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/1489/aoc5870.jpg Both are well above the 30FPS threshold and perfectly playable. Load for the 470 was 81C and load for the 5870 was 65C. IMO the FPS edge of the 470 in this title is offset by the much cooler load temp of the 5870. You'd be happy with either card and the 5870 does idle and particularly load cooler.

Like all MMO's this is the time where lots of particle effects get thrown off and causes slowdowns! In Sabazious or Seruah, fps goes down to below 20 fps at 11920 by 1200 rez with 4XAA and stuffHowever, I have some good news for AoC, the DX9 and DX 10 client for Rise of the Godslayer expansion packs as a separate executable for both DX versions....are a lot more optimized according to those in the beta, so all cards should benefit even more. That is if they are separate executables for main game and expansion and I dunno how an integrated executable would work....here is hoping it does work! Still, Raids will bring cards down in performance!

MUYA,
I haven't attempted raiding with max details on any graphics card yet @ 1920x using filtering. As you already noted, potential slow downs could be deadly. When I raid I disable many features to keep my FPS as high as possible. Currently I'm not willing to risk party members lives because of an odd slow down or pause. If I tag along in a non essential role in the future I may try it. I have done the Crow's Nest and areas like it with all on and maxed without difficulty and that's not the same as some of the most demanding raids.

Now I'll add idle temps to what I noted earlier about load. Stock idle temps for a single 470 in my case was 42C. Single HD 5870 was 33C. Below are stock idle SLi/Crossfire numbers. SLi ![]() Crossfire ![]() ![]() So around 10C idle variation and around 16C or more load. In AoC the only difference I felt between them was the amount of heat coming out of my case ![]()
