If you haven't played it yet, do so. It is quite a bit different story wise to the original.

Was thinking of running one of my 470's in the 4x slot. They are close together because of my mobo Asus P6T the two 16x are right next to each other. Yes I will lose a little performance but I wanted cooler running cards. Should I give it a try or will I be suffering from the missing bandwidth. Thanks

I wouldn't do it.

If its effecting the performance enough to bring the average FPS down, then that means its creating a bottleneck under certain situations. Without seeing a line graph to show how this effects performance over time, I wouldn't do it.

Then again, you could just try it to see if its noticeable to you. Its not like you can't move the card again later.

I tested 16x|8x vs 16x|4x in my 16x|8x|4x|8x mobo. The differences between running slots 1 and 3 vs 1 and 2 @ 1920x; 1FPS in the 20-40FPS range, 2FPS in the 40-50FPS range, 5FPS in the 70-80FPS range. So it should have a very small impact on your min FPS. You can decide if you think the hit is worth it. Keeping the cards separated will reduce both your idle and load temps as well as keep the fans from running medium high most of the time when gaming.

I got those numbers from; Heaven v2, Dragon Age, The Witcher, Age of Conan and Crysis.

Thanks for your reply. I might give it a try this weekend.I can always move the card back. The cards get 88-85 while playing BC2 at 1920x120 with 8aa and 16af and no HBAO or whatever it is. During Crysis hey get about 91-88 with 16aa and 16af. I dont hear the fans cause I use headphones. I will check it out and see. They are idling at 58-55 right now. Also my system fans aer on low was thinking of moving then to medium or high to see if that helps.

Wow... its actually playable!

I figured it'd be better than my 260, but not this good. I even turned on 4x AA and it was still playable. Of course, Crysis is one of those games that seems to be alright at 30fps for me, where as I prefer most games to be over 50... but still. I set Shaders to High and gained another 10-20fps. Its buttery smooth (40-60fps) at 1920x1200 with 4xAA and everything set to Very High except for Shaders. I'm quite impressed with this! It ran at 40fps through the intro. I remember that being a total slide show (less than 10fps) at max settings at 1600x1200 on my 8800GTX when I first played the game.

Upon exiting the game, I checked my GPU core temp and it was 81C (with the side still off). I think with a case that actually circulates air properly, this could be better.

Of course, I don't play Crysis all the time... but I am happy with this. The card that finally "brings down the giant" and makes Crysis playable with all settings maxed has come sooner than I thought, and it wasn't even that expensive.

So, with this, I'll hang onto the card. I'll keep playing games to see how it works with other titles, but I think it'll be alright. I knew that BFBC2 would be a weak spot for this card, I was just disappointed because I only had two games installed and neither of them impressed me.

I really wanted to be able to play Cryostasis with high frame rates with all settings maxed and lots of wonderful Physx effects, but I guess I'll just have to chalk this one up to a poorly optimized game engine. There's no reason it should be tanking into the 20s with so little going on. I'll just lower some settings and enjoy the game one way or another.

Hopefully STALKER: Call of Pripyat runs well. I just bought it at walmart for a measly $19 (possibly a pricing error) but I haven't installed it yet. I never played Clear Sky but I think I'd rather just play CoP first since the reviews have been much more favorable.

Anyways, I may have to consider getting a new case. I don't want to spend a bunch of money, but I want something solid with good ventilation (primarily for the GPU). If it was relatively quiet as well that'd be very nice.

Got a chance to try some other "older" games. Oblivion, HAWX, Ghostbusters, Stalker CoP - WOW is all I can say. Much better than my HD5870. I wasnt super impressed with the newer games I'm playing and the GTX 480 but now I'm convinced the problem isn't with the new games and the GTX 480 but the crappy ports we get now. Ports are killing PC gaming. Low res textures, pop in textures, crap controls.... we need another Crysis.

I still get a strange judder / jitter / stutter with high FPS unless vsync is enabled. Hopefully they fix that.

Your Antec case is great for a silent system but it's not really well known for good air flow. Hope you can figure something out. In the meantime I'd remove the 250 card. Dedicated cards for PhysX is not really worth it IMO (unless your primary card is from ATI). Maybe you can install a fan or something in that slot to add more airflow.

About the BC2 issue. I haven't tried the game yet on the 480s but maybe you should increase the level of AA and add HBAO on your new card. I guess the 470 won't slow down that much and it'll show the difference to the 260 a bit better. BC2 is not really a taxing game, I played it on a 8800GTX for a while and it performed pretty good in DX10 with 2x AA.

I'll probably take the 250 out after I finish playing Cryostasis... or if I decide to wait on that game, I'll just take it out now.

There is a huge performance boost by having that card do the Physx in that game, even on the 470... but the game is just so ridiculously packed with effects and super high-res normal maps that the frame rates tank, regardless of the Physx load.

Its looking like I'll be getting a new case fairly soon. I really love how solid and quiet the P180B is, but wiring, cooling and space are incredibly bad. Its just not a modern "gamer's" case. It would be better suited to a sleek office machine with a high end CPU since the air circulation is almost entirely focused on the CPU area.

I think I'll go make a thread about this now...

I tried two true 16x slots vs 16x|8x in Heaven v2. There's the Intel DX58SO vs the EVGA X58 SLi LE using my 470s.





Not a big difference.
