Just got the Danger Den water blocks for the 480s, and to my surprise, the block is really really, like 3.2 pounds or something for one block. I'm worried if it's gonna strain the card and motherboard.

Supply/demand is playing havoc with the prices at Amazon. Yesterday, the eVGA GTX 480 was $509.99. Today, it's $526.59. It's only $504.99 at Newegg, but you'd have to pay almost $8 for shipping.

There must be still some good demand for the cards to raise the prices. They have been selling well down here, but the price has dropped by NZ $240

I did some quicktests with overclocking yesterday, raised ONLY the core and shader clocks to 800/1600, but left the memory at default. It was nice to see that it worked fine on my stock voltage (987mV) and saw nice gains in Nvidias new Island techdemo (41 vs 49 fps or 19,5% gain I believe).
However I don't know any "normal" overclocking range for the memory, don't know if the stock 1848mhz are already quite close to the limit, so what is a healthy and secure overclock for that one on the GTX 480? 1900,1950 or 2000? Is Furmark/Kombuster a good app to test memory for overclocking artifacts? Since I wanted to take it safe with the quicktests I forced the fan to 100%, temps didn't break 63C with Kombustor. ![]()

I still find ati-tool to be a great product for testing overclocks on cards. It still works in windows 7 despite spitting out an error.
I'd suggest that for all stability testing

Well, my new case has completely remedied the heat issues I was having.
I just overclocked the card more, rearranged my fans so that the higher-RPM fan is in the bottom, blowing directly at the GPU. I'm running the card at 750\1500\1875 at 1.050v and in the Cryostasis benchmark it tops out at 82C! This is much better than in my old case. At these clocks its probably a 15-20C difference, and I don't even have my bottom fan speed set to high. Once the weather gets hotter I'll definitely need to crank it up a notch or lower my overclocks (its only 55F here right now) but for now, this is good. My benchmark scores have also gone up, so the overclocking is actually doing something. Going from 600/1215/1674 to 750/1500/1875 in the Cryostasis benchmark (with my 250 doing the Physx) increased my average FPS from 48.1 to 57.5... that's nearly a 20% increase in average frame rate! My minimum also went up from 29 to 34.7, which is also nearly 20%.

I just officially ordered an EVGA GTX 470.
I missed the NVCP. Can't wait for it to get here. |
