I am not happy with my 5870... not at all.

Thinking of returning it tomorrow and getting a GTX 480, but am worried about temps and wattage in my air-cooled 600w powered comp.

driver problems? AA problems? or other typical ATi problems?

What case you got? fan setup? room temp? pics?

The 5870 is just not boosting my frames at all in most games... GTA4 actually runs significantly worse. The only game I tested last night and today that gave me a significant increase in performance was Bad Company 2, which somehow got a 20fps boost. Nothing else came at all close to that, and $420 to run one game better is insane.

On top of that the profiles on ATI are annoying and both Metro 2033 and Borderlands would suddenly not load up at all, which googling tells me is an issue with their Physx needs and some ATI drivers.

It's just a cluster-f**k all around really, and exactly what I feared when I was thinking of going ATI because of all the good reviews.

So I am planning to return it tomorrow and either get a second GTX 275 and join the world of SLI, or spend too much money and get a 480. Or neither and get a PS3 or Wii... hahaha.

I have a nice Antec tower case with 4 fans on it that keeps things nice and cool. Room temp is always 75 degrees.

I know what you mean about the ATi drivers, it can be a mess.

when it comes to 480 and you case, what antec case do you have exactly? 4 fans? so that would be 2 intake? 2 exhaust? Do you have negative case pressure (when more fans pull air out, then its being pumped inside)?

When it comes to cooling its not that bad, it will be a bit hotter then 275. in worst case scenario, it would be a good idea to place 120mm fan blowing air towards the 480 intake fan.

btw is your CPU overclocked? I wonder if one of the reasons why you are not seeing a larger boost because of CPU bottleneck

It's a rather standard Antec case... big black thing. The 4 fans are one on the side, one on top and two in front. The one on the side blows right on the GPU.

As for my CPU, no, I run everything stock. It's a good CPU though, everything I read tells me I would gain next to nothing in games by upgrading to a low level i7. If you mean that I need an extreme $800 processor to get anything out of a 5870 then I guess I would say I will not upgrade to one, or a 480, as I cannot do a complete PC overhaul right now financially.

If that is the case, would I still get anything from a second GTX 275?

Yes i am and i just tryed the new beta that came out.[i posted it in the Arma 2 thread]
It works Great so far no problems like the last Beta so it's win/win for me.

you don't need to get a new CPU, just OC it a bit.

you will see bigger performance increase from 480, then getting a second 275.

running cards in SLI/CF requires more CPU power.

Plus more Cooling power
since 2 cards=More heat.

Well I am not OCing it, so that is out of the question. I'll look into the 480 requirements and such more and see if I can handle it. Probably just going to stick with my current rig though, given that reviews compare the 5870 to the 480 rather closely and the 5870 didn't wow me at all.

i would say 480 will be a different story
