Playing GTA4 with 25-40fps is a lot better than 15-30fps, I must say. Must not have been completely CPU limited in that game as the 480 made it run a good bit smoother at max settings, 50 or so draw distance.

The 480 has 1.5GB of VRAM which is the difference in that game.

I was playing GTA EFLC last night and had fraps running. I was getting 90+ fps the whole time, unfortunately without vsync on it felt slow and choppy. Once I enabled vsync my FPS dropped to a steady 55 but it was very smooth.

Yeah, your processor kills the game I'm sure. Still, a mostly steady 40 with everything on was quite nice.

So does everyone here use vsync with the GTX 480? I found games to be choppy without it even when the framerate is very high. I started using d3doverrider and vsync and everything is butter smooth now, just hate to have to cap at 60 fps

GTX 470 here - I use vsync on every thing now. I don't have any issues with games being choppy, but certain games I really enjoy like FEAR and FEARXP - the lighting effects really suffer without it. GoW it's a must have. The cap doesn't bother me though.

No, its butter smooth either way with and without vsync. The only reason why I use vsync is to cap the framerate because I'm content with 60 fps and why let the videocard render "useless" frames that I don't see anyway. Useless because I personally don't see or notice those above 60fps.... milage always differs with people in that regard.

Its definitely not butter smooth without vsync and thats what I'm trying to figure out. Granted my monitor is 1680x1050 and I'm thinking the card is just spitting out too many fps and they are not able to be displayed fast enough causing it to look jittery or choppy. With vsync on and tb enabled it's amazing though. I have very picky eyes, micro stutter just killed the dual cards with me... I'm thinking maybe I need to move up to a 1920x1080 monitor so that the GTX 480 isn't spitting out quite so many fps and that may cure the non-smoothness I'm seeing. Thoughts on that?

Yes I'm by far not too picky, had a 8800GTX until I got the 480 so I was used for lower framerates for a while. I didn't have framerate issues even with the old driver that caused BC2 long DX11 loadtimes, the one where you complained and I play at 1080p all maxed out with 16AF, 32AA. Sure I'm using the 257.15 driver now and the loadtimes are certainly better but general framerate is just as smooth as 197.41 was for me. My eyes simply aren't that picky, at least not for fps but image quality is something else. I can tell when AF or AA isn't properly working but thats more obivious usually.

I can only imagine that the framerate in regard to the refresh rate (of your display) are out of sync once in a while and you notice it. I remember you saying that fraps doesn't show that "drop" or unsync, which would make totally sense (unless its so short that you couldn't tell that the number changed) since fraps only shows the framerate of the graphics card but not the behavoir of the display. I'm using a 46" Sharp HDTV, which behaves quite differently than your display, its reaction time (4ms apparently), 100hz technology or whatever might hide the effect that you experience plus like I said I am not too picky for things like that.

Anyway, when you have a chance to try out a different display, give it a try, because it does sound to me like its primarly related to the display.

I wish the 120hz LCD monitors were cheaper and more readily available. I've love to get one, ever since we went to 60hz widescreen monitors my eyes have hated me.

That PSU should be fine. One large 12v rail.

No, there is an adaptor they include that uses 2 x Molexs to 8 Pin PCI-e. then you'd also use one of your 6 pin PCI-e off the PSU to power the GPU.
