I'm not too bothered about no Ep3 announcement as i would like to see HL3 using source engine 2 and ep3 using the old source engine. It doesnt make sense to put the last episode of HL2 on a new engine. It would probably take away the 'awe' from HL3 if they did that.

I would agree but I'm under the impression that Ep3 is supposed to be the last of the series.

I'm not all that psyched for Portal 2 but if it brings source 2 with it then I'll be excited.

I can actually see this. I know Valve is trying to move past HL- they don't want to be held back by that franchise. However, with how popular it is and Portal is, I could see them continuing the HL story via Portal. Or something along those lines.

There is no HL3, unless Valve has a change of plans. They've already stated that EP3 will be the final chapter for HL. Portal may continue on a different branch in the HL universe, however.

HL2:EP2 looks fine for the most part- maybe up the polys, introduce tessalation, up the particle account... maybe upgrade havok to use the GPU or even have an option for Physx... that's about all I'd ask they add to the engine.

In fact, when playing HL2 a few months ago I was enjoying it 100% maxed, even with SLi 32xAA at 1680x1050. Game looked incredibly crisp and sharp. Texture resolution could use upping of course, but for it's age it still looks nice.

I could see Valve releasing an engine that'd rival the CryEngine 3, yes. And yes, it'd be cool.

However, a big part of the "awe" from Source engine was it's debut title- HL2. And the phsics effects it allowed for as well as the later introduction of HDR. In what way does Valve have anything along those lines to introduce with Source 2? The sequal to CS:S? That could be big, depending on what they did with it. Portal 2? Unless it is a full-fledged game that actually has a plot and story that is simply a different branch of the HL universe I don't see much reason for any ado over this.

No. If Valve were to announce that EP3 would be Source based, and Portal 2 would carry on the HL story (only a different branch/perspective of that story- remember Aperture was competing with Black Mesa) and it'd be based off of Source 2... yeah I'd get excited.

Otherwise, if they simply annouce Portal 2 and a new Source engine... after all this time has passed I'd be a little underwhelmed. Considering how much money they're making off of their Steam sales and all...

Well people that's my point, when the Source Engine still holds up as good as it does now 6 years after (I still love playing L4D2 with friends, it's the best), isn't that a testiment to how genius Valve is at making game engines?

So imagine how cool a Source Engine 2 released in 2011, still looking good in 2017 would be? DX11, tesselation etc., but being very light resources and efficient too, enabling and adding more advanced features in the years to come as with Source

The engine it self isn't what originally got people hyped about Source- it was HL2 and what Valve was able to do back then. Physics weren't a big aspect of most games back then- but HL2 via the Source engine actually started promoting physics in games well before any other title did- and that was using Havok and CPU based.

HDR was introduced with Source, and incorporated into HL2. I guess I'm saying that HL2 sold the source engine and made it successful, not the other way around. If Valve just introduces Source 2 with no ground-breaking and highly anticipated title to go alone with it... the announcement wont be nearly as big.

THERE IS NO HL3, EP3 IS IT, END OF THE HL FRANCHISE.

Now, I understand people can still hope for HL3- but Valve's last official statement is that there will be no HL3. EP3 is the final chapter.

Yes, that can change- they have not announced it yet thus we have no reason to believe there will ever be a HL3.

Mark my words, a good engine can make or break a game. Doom 3 engine broke ET: Quake Wars IMO. Source Engine made HL2 and L4D series IMO.

Regarding HL3 I wouldn't say never.. Personally I kind of think (granted I also hope) that Half-Life 3 will come at some point, I just think that Valve is saying that they'd like to make other things for now.. Develop Portal perhaps L4D franchise, or more likely create new stuff.. then who knows if they feel like making a kickass HL3 in 8-10 years time
