There is a new rewrite of the Nvidia HDMI driver that was just submitted to the alsa maintainer on the alsa-devel mailing list yesterday I believe. Hopefully very soon we'll have support for audio-over-HDMI with GT2XX cards in vanilla alsa.

EDIT: Nothing committed to alsa-kmirror yet. To the mailing list! FURTHER EDIT: Relevant post. In light of that I'm not going to put any more coding effort into this (but I'll continue supporting the thread and watching for the code to drop in ALSA). Wei Ni will certainly do a better job than I ever could. |

MEANWHILE: The real code is being reviewed. Hopefully this merges soon and it all becomes clean. I may try to merge the under-review patch in this weekend. BWTM: It's been committed to Takashi Iwai's dev tree, so it may be straightforward to generate a new patch from an ALSA snapshot. I'll look into it. |

I've updated the wiki page with instructions for installing with the latest ALSA snapshots from Takashi Iwai. These snapshots include the official driver update from Wei Ni of nVidia for HDMI audio. It's still not perfect, but it is cleaner than the old patch. GT220 users still need a little additional patching, but nothing too rough (3 new lines).
If you make the change, please report how it goes, either here or on the XBMC thread. Thanks! |

Could anyone explain what is meant with "Ubuntu users make sure to remove the linux-backports-modules-alsa-`uname -r` package or your newly compiled ALSA drivers will be ignored" on the wiki page? I'm not sure what to do to complete this step.

This is my first post to the group. I've attempted to use all the information I could find to avoid asking "dumb questions" and wasting everyones time but after having to reinstall a couple times, here it goes. This is what I've been able to accomplish so far:
I've updated the alsa driver to 1.0.23 I've tried the nvidia drivers 185, 190, and 195 (currently have 190 running) I have a pny gt220 that shows up in aplay as such: chuck@ubuntu:~$ aplay -l **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices **** card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: STAC92xx Analog [STAC92xx Analog] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: STAC92xx Digital [STAC92xx Digital] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 3: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 7: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 8: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 9: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 I've tried to follow the wiki (http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=HOW-TO_set_up_HDMI...) but I don't fully understand it. I attempted to edit the sound.conf file only to find that there wasn't one. I created the file but I wasn't sure what, if anything, I should be adding so I added the line "enable_msi=0 probe_mask=0xffff,0xfff2" but that had no effect. I stopped there hoping to avoid any further mistakes. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

See this thread: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...=150113&page=3 I stumbled for a long time before paoleary got me straightened out. Post #33 in that thread is when things started working for me. Last edited by zim2dive; 06-23-10 at 07:06 AM. Reason: add link.. doh! |

Code:
options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=0xffff,0xfff2 Sigh. People are always worried about breaking things that are already broken. These are low-risk operations. ![]() |

Sweet success! All the work finally paid off. It seemed that changing the sound.conf file was the only thing holding me back. Thanks for all the help!
For the record, I had no intention of giving up. I just needed some guidance Chuck |
