Red hat 9 Crashing

Alright, here i go
it seems like 30-40 minutes of using Red Hat 9 and it crashes... Monitor goes blank... but if i pick up my phone... there is still a connection. So i restart the computer and the BIOS gives me 3 short beeps.

my machine is:
AMD XP2100 (1.7GHz)
GeForce 3 TI200 128MB
40GB Maxtor HDD
DDR PC2700 512MB

I thought it may have been the video driver or the Video Card... I uninstalled the Drive IA32, the problem was still there. So i borrowed an AGP card from my Friend... still the same problem... So i am back to the original card waiting for suggestions.

If anyone has any ideas I am always open to suggestions
If you need more info, tell me what you need and i'll see what i can do.

See if you have power management activated on your system. Sounds like the power management is shutting off your monitor and then isn't able to turn it back on when you move your mouse (do are moving your mouse, right?)

Shut off the power management and see if that helps.

Yes, Moving the mouse is first instint.

I am not where to go to check the power management.

I don't think that is the problem... because it happends when i am using the computer... (ie games)

but if you could tell me where to go to check the pwr management that would be great

I'm not on RH right now (am at work), so I couldn't tell you exactly - but the System Settings would be my best bet.

And since you're playing games when it happens, it sounds like a driver problem (or memory problem) of some sort. You might try installing new drivers for your vid card or cleaning the contacts on your RAM (w/an eraser).

Ok, by reading help pages i figured out the problem.

The kernel (2.4.20-20.8) doesn't like the VIA KT400 chipsets on my Asus 8X7V mobo
causing a problem with the AGP slot. reasoning behind the 3 beeps.

So anyways.. i need to update the kernel. here is where you guys/gals coming.

I know which kernel i need... and have downloaded two of them

kernel-2.4.20-20.9.i386.rpm and
kernel-2.4.20-20.9.i686.rpm


so which one do i use?

AMD XP 2100 (1.7)
DDR PC2700 512MB
Maxtor 40 GB
GeForce 3 TI200 128mb
Asus 8X7V mobo, KT400 chips

if you need any other infomation about my pc let me know...

The better kernel for better performance for your computer should be kernel-2.4.XXX.athlon.rpm indeed ...

I'd better custom kernel by sources by your own (specifing CPU model, etc) and recompiling ...

If you want support to do it, please reply.

I don't know C or how to compile source yet. I am very new to linux.

Do you know where i can download a new kernel and which verson of 2.4.x i should get? or should i go with 2.5? I have 2.4.20.0-8 right now. I downloaded 2.4.20.9 but i haven't tried it yet.
I'll give it a try ... the worse thing is i'd have to reformat... again..

You absolutely do not need to reformat your system nor to be a C programmer, for rebuilding a new kernel, ...

I clicked on the link... and checked out 2.4.22. it is a patch i suppose.. but i don't know how to compile the source. i have downloaded it already. Do i just copy and paste it to an editor or a compiler? After that what do i have? (rpm?)

You'd better get the Full kernel version (click on 'F' and take linux-2.4.22.tar.bz2) untar it under /usr/src (cd /usr/src; tar xvjf <wherever-you-saved>/linux-2.4.22.tar.bz2), change dir under new created folder and read README for compile/install procedure.
Anyway you should do:
- make mrproper
- make xconfig (or make menuconfig : you configure all your kenel options, but you'd better "load configuration from file..." and get an older configuration, such as /boot/config-2.4.xxx and work onto it - please read documentation -)
- make dep && make clean && make bzImage && make modules && make modules_install
(... go having a breakfast ... ;-)
if everything goes fine with no errors ...
- make install
- reboot
Now you should have a new entry in your grub's choices (Red Hat Linux (2.4.22))
