* Removal or rewrite of dozens of modules, code simplification and tens of thousands of lines of code removed
* Some functionalities that are less used are now moved to extensions
* More assembly optimizatinons, especially SSSE3/SSE4 and ARM Neon
* Fewer threads used

* Simplified and improved libVLC, removal of exceptions for better C integration
* New phonon-backend for Qt applications, on all platforms

seems to ATI drivers are also broken with VLC, just like with XBMC, they simply can't get GPU acceleration right.

some files work, some don't

I read the problem is a limitation in the video drivers not supporting a greater REF valued then 11. I think Blueray movies stick to around REF 7 while user made rips almost double that in attempt to obtain better quality for their bitrate.

This thread claims it is an MPC bug, although both players share ffdshow so it may be an ffdshow bug if VLC has it too.

and ATI drivers also don't support Multi-Telislice (sp?) files.
