Sure, you could probably use a fake name, but if someone steals or hacks your account or w/e, they use your real life ID as the last measure to confirm your identity.

It's a bad idea, the paranoia about security (it's just your name, idiots, it's all over the place) is even worse. Just a knee-jerk reaction from the community. The WoW forums have always been garbage as far as discussion goes, and many players have never posted on them.

The measures people went to to prove how much information can be obtained from only a name are not something most people can or would do. Even still, it's all publicly available information. If you're so worried about being stalked or murdered in your sleep because your name is available on the internet (I hope you don't work for a company with a web site, go to a public college, graduate from a public high school, have a social networking page, etc.) then simply don't post on the forums (likely you already don't anyway) and problem solved.

That said, this idea has received extremely negative feedback and I'm appalled at Blizzard's response as a company. Basically they're saying "Well, look, we know you hate it, but this is OUR vision and we are doing it anyway". They seem to have forgotten, in this case, that delivering an experience the customer wants is their primary objective. RealID is a clever idea but bringing it to this medium is just not something people are all that interested in, and the community, having it forced down their throats, is responding with equal force.

What are you talking about? If someone gets your account information they can just access your account management page and get your name, "real ID" wouldn't make any difference. Your address and credit card information are not shown on your account management page so that's safe either way. Oh yeah, and don't be a moron and get hacked.

Not to mention going to job interviews/etc...last thing you want is people to see you have a posts all over WoW forum and sometimes everyone does have a bit of a rant...and they will all this kind of information.

I think they have a little thing called history exactly for this purpose. Same way they log IP adresses, that accessed your acount.

And I've heard about people getting their accounts back this way.
