Hey everyone. Sorry about another "I have _____, should I buy _____?" thread, but I've been somewhat out of the hardware game these past few months. It looks like my 8800GTX might be giving up the ghost and I only have two precious weeks before SC2 is out!
So, is the 8800GTX -> GTX 460 jump worth it, or do I just try and get an RMA for the 8800? Keep in mind this is with the system in my sig - E4300 CPU @ 3.2GHz. The review benchies for the card look great and all, but that's with a Core i7/DDR3 base, not an aging C2D. http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards....=474&card2=632 Raw spec numbers look great and there is large amount of overclocking potential, but again, I'm concerned my base system is going to hold me back from the true performance increases. Thanks for your help. =)

what you'll get with the GPU upgrade is the ability to increase your resolution without impacting your frame rate, and the 460 is definitely an upgrade over an 8800. if your CPU is inadequate that is another issue, but a C2D@3.2GHz should be fine. as to cost, if your budget is ~$200 GTX 460 is your best bet.
if you're curious here's a benchmark: http://forum.teamxbox.com/showthread.php?t=639790 ![]() |

Thanks for that. Looks like my CPU @3.2GHz won't be holding me back too much in SC2 at least.
![]() Nice jump here for Bad Company 2 +/- a few FPS since the 8800GTS 512MB might be ever so slightly slower than the 8800GTX. http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/...iew/page11.asp

Just get GTX 460 now and RMA 8800GTX too then you probably will get GTX 280 card, after that you can sell the replacement on ebay. I did the same when BFG Geforce 6800GT died and bought Leadtek Geforce 6600GT while I RMAed BFG Geforce 6800GT and got replacement then I sold Geforce 6600GT on ebay.
Dont bother think about waste around $600 on Core i7/DDR3 base, they wont last much long until it replace by Sandy Bridge for mainstream later 2010 and the high end in 2011. Your motherboard will be fine by flash latest BIOS and upgrade E4300 to Q9550 E0 CPU for $200 or less on ebay and overclock to 4GHz to get around same performance as 4GHz Core i7 920/930 in games. http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/vid..._11.html#sect0 Core i7, Q9550, E4300 CPU scaling in games: http://www.hardware.fr/articles/778-...intel-amd.html Geforce GTX 460 10 CPUs scaling in games: http://lab501.ro/placi-video/gigabyt...0-procesoare/7

Strangely enough, I'm typing this from my desktop. Display got a signal right away, no screen corruption or anything.

Starcraft II must not take very good advantage of quad cores. The dual core counterparts seem to do just as well or better because of higher clocks.

Looks like it cares about clockspeed more than cores, yeah.
