GTX 460 SLI: The REAL deal

Now, all of the results for the GTX 275, 280 and 285 are all in single GPU forms. We can compare those to the single GTX 460 for comparison, and it would be easy to conclude that they scale similarly if not identically when put in SLI.


So, where does that put the GTX 460? It is virtually EVEN with the GTX 285; the 285 wins some, the 460 wins some... notice how I used high resolution, high memory usage scenarios too. These are fair comparisons.

So my question is, where do you get off saying that the 275, 280, and 285 are faster than the GTX 460? The 460 looks dead even compared to a 285 but faster than the 280 or 275. It also looks like the GTX 460 does better in newer titles. That bodes well for it in the future.


BTW, those graphs are from the article I posted. Draw your own conclusions, but I think the facts are plain as day. The GTX 460 is an excellent card with virtually identical speed to a GTX 285, which by the way, uses more power and gives off more heat than the GTX 460, and the 460 is a DX11 part.

Don't mind me though as I am a frames per second *****. And anything under 60fps minimum not average is not very welcome in my world. But it is a good deal for the mid market. As an enthusiast in the pc world I would never consider this solution, but would recommend it to people building there first gaming pc's and just getting a feel for the platform.

They may never release a video card fast enough for me, but that's my problem.

Even with dual ati 5970's I wanted more power. And still do. Probably get dual ati 6970's or tri gtx580's next round.

So as you can see, don't mind me. I'm not sane when it comes to this stuff... Lol.

I understand where you're coming from but unless someone is gaming at 2560 resolutions, SLI 460's can run just about any game at max or near max settings and that's really all most of us want.

I can understand holding off on the 460's if there were some hot new games coming up that were promsing to absolutely crush current graphics hardware (like how crysis collectively raped systems world wide) but I just don't see anything like that on the horizon. Rage and Crysis 2 are about the only 2 demanding games I see coming and I actually doubt (but don't quote me on this) that they'll be worse than metro currently is on our hardware.

I'd say that a very small percentage of the gaming community is in as demanding a mindset as you are and the performance a pair of 460's dish out will deliver enough power for most gamers.

As for me, I'm trying to decide if a 470 right now is worth the extra $75 vs a 1gb 460.

If you're not going to do SLI 460's immediately, the GTX 470 is definitely the better card. It is considerably faster than the 460.

BTW, as usual, Newegg is selling the GTX 2xx series for more than the GTX 460.

But what you said is 100% correct.

Crysis 2 & rage are the near future games that may have any negative hit on high end video cards. Even then I think rage should run amazing on a single gtx460. It runs at 60fps locked on the consoles for goodness sakes. amazing! Plus crysis 2 should run much better then crysis 1 as well.

That's actually why I sold the 5970's for now. Didn't want to sell after the new ones were released and lose 50% of the value of the cards. Got 80% back of what I paid and going to sit on the money till the next gen comes.

Plus the games I plan to play this year my old dual gtx285's can run over 60fps min.

If I'm going with single card, I need the performance of dual 8800GTX, with significantly lower power consumption and heat output which should I choose- GTX460 or HD5850?

Right now I'm really torn between the two.

I was going to get the Palit 460 and for $50 more, I got the 470.

A lot of reviews I've read on the 470's indicate near 480 performance when overclocked.

Looking at the benchmarks the ati 5850 is the better choice. But both solutions are not quite as fast as the dual 8800gtx's. Maybe very close, but I think the dual gtx would pull ahead in real games.
