Just installed Madriva Free 2007.1 and ran into this problem... intend to try this when I get home tonight but I'm a recent retread to *NIX and it's been years, do I replace "uname" with a user name on my system or is this literally the flag string needed to compile?

For the benefit of others, this error message can/will occur on debian and ubuntu if the 'linux-headers' package isn't installed, however, this should only be necessary for pre-built 'stock' kernels.

YMMV.

Well I fall victim of this module problem when I try to startX.
attached are my logs.
I've tried installing the equivalent of what's listed in the Red Hat installation guide (running Mandriva 2007 Spring Free), but I don't know what else to try. The attached bug report is from when I tried a legacy MX 4000 card, and the install log is from the newer FX 5700 card that I tried with the newest driver, thinking that would help things. No go. Both had the exact same error.
This installation of mandriva is actually an upgrade (I know, I've already slapped my wrists) from 2006 LE. The nvidia driver along with beryl was working prior to the upgrade. I don't know what else to try aside from reinstalling (my important stuff is on separate partitions - so it's not that big of a deal. Just annoying. I used the help at the beginning of this thread to specify the kernel using -k$(uname -r)...thanks for that!!
So here I sit. Using software rendering...on my knees waiting for someone to help me.

Using an existing thread rather than starting a new one.

Downloaded and installed, per instructions. Unable to load the nvidia.ko module. Attached the nvidia-bug-report.log file. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, that works fine for me. But after confirming the nvidia-xconfig with yes
the notebook does not start with kde. "Checking ... state ..." (black screen). If
I edit my /etc/X11/xorg.conf by hand and write "vesa" instead of "nvidia" I can start
kdm again. (etc/init.d/kdm start|stop). Any ideas? I open a thread before I saw your
suggestion here. http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...39#post1904239

In the future, it's probably better to start your own thread than to bump one that has gone a year and a half without any posts.

As for your problem, though.... Did you blacklist the nouveau kernel module?
