Today I just went to tri sli gtx 480. Before I did, I went to nvidia's slizone to see if they had certified power supplies which they did for 3 way sli gtx 480. The problem is not that they aren't powerful (all are 1200 watt and above) but they don't have enough pci-e connections on the power supply itself. I had a silverstone strider 1500 watt. The box for it said 3x vga for 3 way sli. BS. It comes with more than enough pci-e cables (each cable has a seperate 6 and 8 pin connector on each) but there are only 4 pci-e connector on the modular connections of the power supply. And I went online to check for wiring schematics just to be sure, and there is only 4 connections. The problem gets worse. About 1/2-2/3 of the slizone recommended psu's have the same problem. The only ones that don't have the pci-e power connection problems are ones by be-quite, pc power and cooling and corsairs new ax1200 gold psu. For all you hx1000 lovers out there, the corsair ax1200 is a 80 plus gold certified 1200 watt psu and has the right amount of connections for 3 way sli. I almost was going to wait for that psu until I was able to get my friend to swap my silverstone for his pc power and cooling 1200 watt that has proper 3 way sli power for 3 gtx 480's since he is only using a single zotac gtx 480 (he doesn't have the mb space for 2 way sli meaning he is using up the pci-e space with 1x cards which he needs for port multiplying esata card and descrete sound card. FYI, he's using the asus p6t deluxe v1 mb)

Whatever you were asking.... please put it into 1 sentence.
If your psu doesn't natively have the power connectors, at least a combination of 6x, 6 or 8-pin connectors. Be prepared to have a 1k psu with 80+ Amps on the 12v rails. You should be fine, if that's what you're asking...

Well, now that its translated, I think tech report did something about a tri-sli setup with 480s, seems like they needed a 1400w power supply. Maybe I'll see if I can find it.
Edit: Nm, it was a quad SLI that needed 1.5kw, I'm guessing you'd want 1.2kw though. |

I have my power supply I need in the pc power and cooling 1200 watt. It has the proper connections I need for 3 way sli. Fortunately I didn't spend a cent since my friend was using in his system. What I was trying to say is that most of the nvidia sli certified power supplies for tri sli gtx 480 minus the ones I mentioned don't acutally have enough connections on the power supply itself to power 3 video cards. They have the wattage though. Why I am pissed, I just had to give up a 1500 watt silverstone strider because the connection schematics don't have 3 6pin and 3 8 pin individual connectors. Really, that much power and you can't connect 3 video cards, duh? And that's the story with most of nvidia's recommended power supplies too.

1200 watts should be plenty and I would have thought a 1500 watt silverstone would be plenty. You would think if it is a 1200 watt it would come with plenty of PCI-e cables.I have a cooler Master UCP 1100watt and it comes with 6 PCIe 6pin and 3 PCIe 8pin ,but it is not moduler.I seen that it is certified for TRI GTX 470 witch I have.I did'nt think it would be enough but I was running three GTX 280 overclocked and nvidia has them rated at 236watts and the GTX 470 is 215watts,but they will be overclocked. So I should'nt have any problems .I would like to have a modular power supply ,but I don't want to speed around $300 on a new power supply when I have one that will do the job just fine.

the 1200 watt is fine for pci-e connectors. It has 3 6 pin and 3 8 pin on it being the one I am using now. It's the silverstone 1500 watt that sucks. The modular connections are 4 pci-e ports with one 6 pin and one 8 pin on each wire. since you can't use both (it acutally physically impossible) pinouts per wire, that means you can have 2 300 watt cards with the silverstone. Like I said, the silverstone is a waste of a power supply for what you can connect. If I could find it, I would get the amatech axe deluxe 1500 watt. The amatech has proper amount of connections for 3way sli as I have read through reviews.

So if I am reading it right, my Thermaltake 1200W W0133RU is supposedly certifified to handle 3x480 GTX cards.

supposedly would be correct. Unless you see more than 4 pci-e modular connections on it. It's really dumb, high power psu without enough pci-e connections, duh?
