Finally solved Nvidia driver problems!

by switching to ATI !!

Specifically Radeon HD 5850 capable of 2 TeraFLOPS

Still plan on using the Nvidia 8800 GTX in the same system at the same time.
Has anyone used an Nvidia card with an ATI card simultaneously in Linux. I think the X window system can support that now.

You know what's funny? I solved my ATI problems by switching to Nvidia.

What issues were you having? My fermi is doing fine in Ubuntu 10.04 so far.

KDE 4.4.5 is slow as hell with Nvidia drivers (I only use 2d drivers features and turn off all 3d opengl option in KDE).

My display is a 2500x1600 so that could be a problem for the Nvidia drivers.

I don't know. Either KDE was getting progressively worse as they moved to KDE 4.4.5 and used more features or the Nvidia drivers are getting more progressively worse.

Yeah, I've read a number of posts about that. I use Gnome pretty exclusively, so haven't seen it, thankfully.

Good luck with the 5850, fine card. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

KDE 4.5 rocks here on Kubuntu, this with a cheapo nvidia 8400GS card. Windows are snappier than Gnome, as for ATI, hope they come out with better drivers, I had to shelf a dual GPU 4850 due to drivers just not working right. Even HD movies were a pain.

I'm using a laptop with a 9600 card in it and I couldn't be happier with opensuse.

I'll be sticking with Nvidia whenever I get around to picking a new laptop up too, but I'll also be sticking with Gnome. KDE and I don't play nice together.

Really? I absolutely HATE gnome. One of the reasons I stopped using linux a while back is because of how crappy gnome looked. I love KDE, and I love how much eye candy KDE has....

Compiz+Emerald = good eye candy without the hangs and crashes.

I know it may just be my experience with it, but every KDE release I've ever used has given me enough hangs or app crashes traceable back to KDE that I just have no interest in it any more.

Gnome on the other hand has been trouble free for me for the most part.

EDIT: And it's not that bad looking.

I'm beginning not to like you, grey. I had my mind all made up on opensuse/kde being what I wanted, and you go and show me something as beautiful as that pic.

My next project was to create a pseudo-MAC doc panel just like the one you have on your desktop.

Don't not like me Bro - I have enough people who do that already

Mind you that's on my 3 year old XPS with intel gfx chip,and smooth as butter. The way I like Gnome configured it uses less resources than KDE, which may account for the roughness KDE had with OS11.3 for me. Don't have it with me atm, but mem usage is usually about 25% lower with similar settings between the 2 DEs. That's my lappy though, yours may have more resources to spare.

EDIT: That's Cairo dock btw. Highly themeable and configurable through it's own GUI.
