Default 256.44 X freezes

256.44 seem to have a regression, many archlinux users have reverted to 256.35 to avoid X freezes:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=102202

I had some X freezes on my GT 240, i think they have happened when i have had vdpau working (mplayer or mythtv) and switching to firefox.
I have not had any freezes on my GTX 460 but i dont use vdpau very often on that machine though.

I got a ubuntu setup for stable stuff, and a gentoo one for experimental stuff. Had a xorg freeze in gentoo, but ubuntu is rock stable. Might be newer kernel/xorg causing issues.

Still, if 256.35 is stable, 256.44 may very well have a new bug.

Hello

I got the same problem ... my system freezes for 5 or 6 seconds randomly....

I've had to disable all kde animations and options (windows, icons, wallpapers, etc) trying to avoid it, but it is happens sometimes ...

I 've installed 256.35 again and the problem disappears ... uh uh .. something strange into v256.44 maybe ...

Fedora 13, kernel 2.6.35, nvidia 256.44 , Quadro NVS 135M

GTX 470 with 256.44 driver and all latest packages from official Arch Linux repos, no testing. I have a 64-bit machine. No problems whatsoever.
Running Gnome and all sorts of compositing disabled.

Also gaming is stable and much better framerates than the previous 256.35 driver!

Same problem here using different programs as firefox, games, openoffice.
I've a 64bit pc with Archlinux and a Geforce 240gt GPU.
I have reinstalled 256.35 and solved for the moment.

Code:
[marco@myhost ~]$ uname -a
Linux myhost 2.6.34-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Aug 4 14:31:56 CEST 2010 x86_64 AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 965 Processor AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux

i'm having the same issue. 256.44 will randomly lockup my machine. I have a GT 240, kernel 2.6.34.3, X.Org X Server 1.7.6, on Kubuntu 10.04.

I logged in remotely using SSH and noticed Xorg is using 100% CPU. Also, couldn't kill Xorg.

Thank you for reporting these stability problems. We believe we were able to reproduce a regression affecting (at least some) GT21x GPUs and have started looking into this problem.
