Default Nvidia Drivers and Mandrake 9.2 X server crashes

Ok, Here's the trouble. Mandrake 9.2, current Nvidia drivers, kernel-sources installed. The Nvidia installer works just fine. It compiles fine. When I try startx the server crashes and says unable to initialize the kernel module. It also says something about ulimit -v number. Anyway, I would post /var/log/XFree86.0.log but the computer locks up after the crash, and the log file never gets updated or loses the update during the file scan upon reboot. I've tried a Geforce 4 440 mx and a TNT2 Ultra. Both have the same problem. Using the nv driver boots just fine. I really have no idea where to go from here, other than to try some older drivers, any thoughts.

well go to console mode, login as root aand type "modprobe nvidia" then try to start the x server, it'll probably work then, if it works add the modprobe command to the boot.local file in ur /etc/ directory.

I did try that last night and it spouted something about tainting the kernel and installed it. Still crashed though.

Thanks for the fast reply.

If the modprobe manually doesn't give you any errors, then the module inserted into the kernel fine. The problem after that is likely to be hardware settings.

Have you tried adding to your "Device" section:

Option "NvAGP" "1"
