Severe slowness after switching to 256.44

After running with 256.44 for a few hours, graphics gets super slow. Like switching windows takes on the order of /seconds/ even just switching focus to a different existing window can take a second or more.

I have found that switching to a vt and back will temporarily speed things back up, but it only lasts for a little while. cpu usage doesn't seem out of the ordinary, nor does memory use. 2G out of 4G used, either with lots of (actual) free mem, or with it all filled with cache.

Distro: Debian Sid
Kernel: liquorix based 2.6.35 amd64
X: X.Org X Server 1.7.7
Nvidia drivers: 256.44 amd64
Desktop: KDE with kwin gl compositing
Monitor1: 24" 1920x1080p LCD
Monitor2: 21" 1600x1200 CRT
Desktop Setup: Primary Monitor1 / Monitor2 RightOf Monitor1

Yeah, that also helps. Been running with compositing off all day because the machine becomes /useless/ after a few minutes.

I don't know with which driver version it started with, It's been a while since I used my desktop this much.

since Kwin composition keeps evolving i won't excerp KDE as an inocent party

I heard some improvements have been made in KDE 4.5, i presume now you are running 4.4.5 ( as i do too with liquorix kernel too, but without these issues ) so maybe in the future things might get better.

The reason I suspect the driver is because I run an almost identical setup, with one difference, it has an intel gpu. And it doesn't happen there. So by order of elimination theres only one thing left, the nvidia gpu and its driver.

and you have the same effects active?

It seems even with compositing off, it still gets slow. It just takes longer.

xrestop shows about 100MB of pixmaps. That doesn't seem that unreasonable, at least not out of the ordinary, and the machine has plenty of free ram still. No excess cpu use, but switching windows takes half of a second, to a couple seconds.

It is very annoying.

try 256.52 now that is out, says something about leaks that might help you

Same problem. I just hope this is fixed soon. kwin+compositing is now smooth as butter on my laptop with 2.6.36-rc3.

Yeah, 256.52 doesn't help. And as mentioned before, even with compositing off, after a few hours (5-10) it still gets slow. Switching to a VT helps get most of the performance back, but its just going to get slow again.
