I have an Asus G60JX Republic of Gamer laptop with the following specs.
Intel i-5 430M 4 GB RAM NVidia GeForce 360M GTS CUDA (1 GB) Mobile Intel® HM55 Express Chipset 500 GB SATA HDD I use Mandriva 2010.1, the kernel version being 2.6.33.5-desktop586-2mnb. I run into frequent system freezes with this laptop. The frequency of the freezes increases with running Compiz or KDE Desktop effects. When I turn both of them off, my uptime increases from few minutes to about an hour, but still encounter the freezes. When the freeze occurs, the system doesn't respond to Ctrl+Alt+Backspace also and the only way out is to hold onto the power button and turn off the laptop. I have tried 195.36.xx and 256.35/44 drivers, tried various kernels from 2.6.33.x to 2.6.35.x , but to no avail. Trying with various kernel parameters doesn't help. I'm unable to run the nvidia bug report script because during the freeze, the system becomes totally unresponsive. The syslog during the freeze always points to similar entries given below: Aug 22 12:02:49 localhost kernel: NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 13, 0001 00000000 00008597 000015e0 00000000 00000040 Aug 22 12:02:49 localhost kernel: NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 13, 0003 00000000 0000502d 000002ac 00000003 00000040 Aug 22 12:02:49 localhost kernel: NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 13, 0003 00000000 0000502d 000002ac 00000003 00000040 I managed to run the nvidia-bug-report.sh before the freeze happened, when the system was responsive, but not sure if its really helpful. Any help would be appreciated,as this is getting really frustrating. |

THanks for the suggestion Licaon. Tried 256.52 and finally stablity seems to have returned. Am running with Compiz on for the last 3 hrs on this new driver and no sign of freezes yet. Will keep the group posted regarding how it goes. Thanks for the help
