Default End of year upgrade build

I'm planning on upgrading my main rig in sig for this Christmas. Will be keeping my case, optical drives, hard drives (for storage only) and possibly my PSU.

I do plan on getting SSD, mobo, proc, ram, and video.

What can I expect in 3 months time? Is there anything I can get now of should I wait for the time to come

Thanks, TJ

Kind of a tough call. Intel is phasing out both the LGA1156 and LGA1366 sockets, and AMD's BullDozer chips will only work in thew yet-to-be-released AM3+ mobos.

I'd probably recommend waiting. For the priceerformance AMD holds the lead- but in sheer raw performance, price completely ignored, Intel cannot be beat. I've got a Core i7 920 and I never see it exceed 15% usage... this is stock with turbo mode disabled.

So, in short, you'll probably be pleased no matter what you get. But, I'd suggest waiting. For longevity I'd recommend sticking with AMD. As the AM3+ mobos will probably support their next batch of processors based on future revisions of the Bulldozer and Magny-Cours architecture.

Then again, if you bought something now you'd still be pleased with it I'm sure. Wouldn't leave you much room to upgrace CPUs in the future, but the performance would likely be such that you'd not need to. And when you did you'd be ready for an entire system over haul anyways.

And yes, adding an SSD even if only a smaller one for the OS- would be *very* beneficial.

Personally, wait. Unless you like upgrading. Like Redeemed said, socket 1366 and 1156 are currently dead end plaforms. 1155 and 2011 both come next year with the new Intel "Sandy Bridge" CPUs.

As far as HD, go SSD.

Sandy Bridge is slated for Q4 2010 and Q1 2011. Sandy Bridge E (The i7 replacement, power user replacement) is slated for later. Summer or fall of 2011.

If you like to upgrade every year then just build now and upgrade next summer when Sandy bridge E comes out.

Reason for waiting for end of year is house getting re-done now and no place really to build + it will be my Xmas present

If I build this year would 1156 or 1366 be better for overclocking proc
