Well if you are going for GPU speed, the galaxy s definitely outperforms the htc evo, just telling toss3 that not all htc phones have weak GPU's.
Honestly though in my opinion GPU speed is a red herring for the most part. Basically any phone that is sold today will run pretty much every android game that exists with decent speed. And that is assuming that you'll do a lot of gaming on your phone. Personally there's only 2 games I play that even make use of the GPU.

You could always go to craigslist. I've seen the Captivate there any where from $200.00 to $450.00. Even a trade for a iPhone 3G.
