I've had enough of my 2x 5870 CrossfireX cards and ATI bad bad bad drivers.

I just got me 2 GTX480 in SLI ( Gigabyte GTX 480 ) to replace them.

I only play 2 games these days, StarCraft 3 and Bad Company 2, with my CrossfireX setup and the games would crash constantly making the experience nothing but a horror.

with the GTX480 SLI, so far so good, no crashes no flickering textures or disappearing objects.

The only thing that worries me is the Heat, I don't know what's the maximum temperature these cards can stand, both cards while running some benchmarks ran up to 95c with my case open!

Ohh I forgot to tell that I use my old GTS250 as a physX card between the 2 GTX480.

It's good to beck back Home !!!

Update.

Went from 9800gtx+ to gtx460 768 standard clock. I run a constant overclock @830
core, 1660 shader and 1950 mem with fan @53. Still quiet enough and temps never get over 65, usually in the low 60s.
Running q9950 with 4 gigs 1066 w/ win 7 64.

A few differences in gta 4, but nothing too major. 50/50/40 high everything 4xaf.
Call of pripyat can be played at around 35-45fps dx 11 max 1680@1050.
The parts of fallout 3 that would choke on max are no more. This really pleased me.
Crysis and Warhead playable on max dx10 w/v sync @ 30fps. Wasn't expecting 60fps.
Dirt 2, pretty much the same performance as 9800gtx+, just with dx11 and max details. 50-60fps
Mafia 2. Super increase. Playable at 60 most everywhere.
Boarderlands. Mostly 60 constant on max vysnc, but the same area that caused my 9800gtx to drop is causing the exact same drop, down to 40fps. Kind of hoped that this wouldn't happen with my new card......
Cryostasis. Can use dx10 now, still with 35-45 vsync.
Conviction. Simliar, but in the 40s/50s mostly, lowest only in the 30s.
LF4D1/2. No slowdowns under 60, not matter whats going on. Exactly what i wanted.
Just cause 2 demo. 20s with 9800GTX. 40-55 with some 30s on max.
Lost planet dx10 demo. Lowest in 30s, mostly in the 45-60 range on v sync.
Metro 2033 dx11 all high. Mostly at 30fps constant with v sync. Sometimes gets into the 40s/50s in easy to render areas. Very high looks pretty, but high is pretty enough.
Trackmania nations united, 60fps on max w vsync everywhere. Huge win for me. Really what i was looking for with this card and i got it.

To be honest i had some visions of 60fps on everything but metro 2033 and crysis but.... thats what a future upgrade to sli is for.

Overall, i'd have to say that for $170 shipped from amazon that this card is great. Its not the super killer app but it plays the newest and the most demanding older games and sli is an attractive step up looming in the future.

OK, glad to post impressions. I bought a GTX 465 to test for use in a scene generation system. Why not? The GTX280 absolutely blew our socks off. But whoa! In OUR s/w, the 465 could not even perform as well as the GTX 9800 in my machine. Never mind the GTX 280.

Look, I know I am in a minority sector of the market. Scientific research. Scene generation. But if you are going to hobble the PCI-E interface (or at least not optimize it) say so in the literature!! Don't make me test endlessly for days trying to track this down! Yes, I found out from someone in the know how the PCI-E interface is not a point of focus. When I turned off the feature that pulls data off the card for further processing (and hand off to other algorithms), it absolutely blew the socks off the GTX 280. But what good is that to me? I need the data off of the card, not just for display!!!

I hope the engineers at nVidia are paying attention to this. And will fix this soon. Yes, Linux, forgot to mention that.

Perhaps wait for PCIE 3.0 to be released in 2011, i believe they're aiming to get it out alongside sandy bridge.

i dont think even agp has a card to use the full power. not even 2.0 so who really cares about 3.0 if you think about it. sandy bridge is something to look forward to for sure

Oh okay, I thought they were going to try and push it for Sandy Bridge release. Probably makes sense to release it with Sandy Bridge E though. Higher performance and whatnot.

If all this talk about PCIe3.0 was in response to my comment... I am wondering how the slot has anything to do with it. I had a 9800 GTX in the slot. A GTX280 also. Both were increasingly faster with regards to rendering AND getting data off the card for downstream porcessing. THEN, I stuck a 465 GTX in the same slot and both the render speed dropped to below what the 9800 could do. However, Heaven Bencmark indicated the card was performing well. So, I turned off the feature in my S/W that reads the data out of the card... and then the render speeds went well past the 280GTX!

So, I am surmizing that the driver for getting data off the card is poor, OR the hardware has been downgraded (the hardware for communicating via the PCI express).

I will also say that I tried this on 3 computers, all very similar... same effect.

So how will waiting for a new PCIe to come out help my problem?

Thanks!!

are you using a custom fan profile in Afterburner? If not then there is your problem. I rarely go above 75c/75% fan on my 480gtx. I know it will be hotter running 2 cards, but adjusting fan profile does really help a great deal.
