X switches to alternate display port

I have a computer with a number of tesla GPUs installed and one quadro 5800, which is used to run the display. Linux boots to runlevel 3, and the console is displayed from the right DVI connector of the 5800, using a DVI to VGA adaptor. When I run startx, the display comes up on the left DVI connector of the 5800, if I move the monitor vga cable to the left connector DVI adaptor, I see the x desktop.

What specific option is used to bind the X display to a physical port on the card?
