Default Re: GeForce 7300 LE w/Kubuntu 10.04/10.10 : My personal nightmare

Just upgraded to Maverick, (two days ago) and there doesn't seem to be a 'linux-headers-generic' in the repos...
Any ideas what the replacement is called for 10.10?

Thanks,
NNN

Yes there is. http://packages.ubuntu.com/maverick/...eaders-generic
I suppose there's something wrong with your apt sources.list

Aha- no wonder! I just remembered, to make sure i was getting the nvidia-current from the ppa you gave me, I disabled all the other repos to make sure i would only have the right packages showing.
[rant]Sometimes i feel like such an idiot- but now is not one of these times. NOW I FEEL EVEN DUMBER..
[/rant]

anyways I'll disable those and then post progress- I have to get it working tonight or I'll have to install windows which is going to be a real hassle (i'll have to try installing windows alongside of linux, not fun)

Okay, changed the repos back and installed nvidia-headers-generic and nvidia-current. nvidia-current installed with the first three errors i got earlier:
Code:
update-alternatives: using /usr/lib/nvidia-current/ld.so.conf to provide /etc/ld
.so.conf.d/GL.conf (gl_conf) in auto mode.
update-alternatives: warning: skip creation of /usr/lib32/vdpau/libvdpau_nvidia.
so.1 because associated file /usr/lib32/nvidia-current/vdpau/libvdpau_nvidia.so.
1 (of link group gl_conf) doesn't exist.
update-alternatives: warning: skip creation of /usr/lib32/libvdpau_nvidia.so bec
ause associated file /usr/lib32/nvidia-current/vdpau/libvdpau_nvidia.so (of link
 group gl_conf) doesn't exist.
but it said it built the dkms module fine and now when I run dkms status it says 'installed' and looks exactly like yours. but when I restart I get a console, and when I 'startx' i get '(EE) No devices detected.

man, and I thought it was almost fixed...

thanks,
NNN

Paste the output of lspci -vvnn. Look for "VGA compatible controller." Here is mine:

Quote:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: nVidia Corporation GT218 [GeForce 210] [10de:0a65] (rev a2) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Subsystem: eVga.com. Corp. Device [3842:1213]
Those are the relevant parts. The red sections identify the chip and card as being nvidia driver compatible.

I don't see any obstacle there. Can you paste a detailed dmesg and /var/log/Xorg.0.log?

sure, coming right up.
EDIT: what's the best way to boot into x with the vesa driver, without having to remove nvidia-current and xorg.conf, etc? I'm sorta transtyping over a kvm switch the output of the tty right now, but that's very limited obviously.

Just get the xorg.conf file out of the way on a temporary basis, like rename it to xorg.conf.old

Okay, here goes (the outputs were too large for a post, so I uploaded them with DropBox)
dmesg output:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10241871/dmesg.output

Xorg.0.log:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10241871/Xorg.0.log

thanks!

BTW I've got a Kworld ATSC 120 (analog/digital tv tuner) in the PC if it matters, that's all the 'cx__' stuff.

I need the xorg log immediately following a failed boot. It is refreshed every time, so you'll have to try to boot the nvidia driver and then post it immediately.
