In your previous post, you stated that xine-ui was also affected. Is xine-ui affected when watching files from your hard-disk as opposed to live TV (I don't recall if xine will play live TV or just pre-recorded files). Thanks.

xine can play live dvb but I normally use xine-ui as a frontend to vdr. Anyway, I found that xine would play vdr recordings of television programmes without problems with the 260.19.12 driver installed. It would only fail when I tried to watch live television.

Edit: I just reinstalled the 260.19.12 driver to reconfirm. This is what I found:

xine and vdr-sxfe (xine-lib based) used as frontends to vdr both hang when trying to play live TV if I specify vdpau as the video driver but work fine if I change from vdpau to xv.

xine will not play live dvb on its own if I specify vdpau as the video driver but it works fine with xv.

xine will play dvb-t recordings made by vdr (mpeg-pes) when using vdpau as the video driver but will not play some older dvb-t recordings that I made with kaffeine. I cannot recall now the exact format I had kaffeine set to use for recordings, e.g. mpeg-ts or mpeg-pes but the file utility tells me that they are mpeg transport streams. It also hangs on the few mpeg4 files I have but will play mpeg2 files that have been transcoded to dvd format and also non-mpeg format files such as flash videos (flv).

vlc, which does not use vdpau AFAIK, will happily play live and recorded dvb-t.

Being a xine-vdpau developer I wanted to leave a quick note:
The issues seems to be related to OSD rendering. As I am busy writing my bachelor thesis atm, I won't be able to have a deeper look at it until 28th October.
After that I will look at it, if nobody else did before.

I can confirm that this is OSD related. On both xine-ui and xineliboutput (a vdr plugin) that are both using xine-lib the crash comes when the OSD is being rendered.

By OSD, do you mean subtitles encoded in the video file, or some menu generated by xine? I assume the former. The only file I have with subtitles hangs xine when using VDPAU even with 256.*, so I think that's a different issue. Can somebody please upload a file that demonstrates this problem to the NVIDIA file drop (see VDPAU sticky post) and provide any details I need on how to configure xine to reproduce this issue. Thanks.

No, its the latter: a OSD item generated by xine...
It may have something to do with xcb (again), I know there was a problem with xcb about a year ago, but I haven't had problems with it until 260.xx again

ctr,

OK, is there a way to enable/disable this OSD so that I can tell if that's the issue I'm seeing? How does this OSD get triggered (i.e. do I need to press a button, does it always happen at the start of playback, ...) Thanks.

I have the same problem but only with 260.xx drivers. 256.xx work fine.

Any file played by smplayer+mplayer exhibits this behavior.

mplayer becomes a zombie process and it may crash, or it may not crash. However, it is unresponsive.

The behavior is somewhat random/erratic, it is not easy to observe patterns or reproduce the issue.

However, for some peculiar reason it seems that if the crash does not occur on the 1st or 2nd clip that is played, after logging-in the DE, everything afterwards never crashes.

Card is an 1GB 9800GT.

Distro is Archlinux amd64.

In my case: when I start xine-ui, the first thing which should appear is the 'Xine' logo, but it is never displayed, xine just freezes before. So the result is just a black window. The xine menu (normally reachable by right mouse button) is not visible/accessible. Some control elements at the 'control' panel are not present (mainly 'VDR' button is missing).
The situation lasts forever, until xine is killed by SIGKILL. As far as I know, the 'Xine' logo is present always, if there is no direct request for playing of something specified on the command line.
I tried to play some DVD's by xine directly (xine dvd://xxxx), then logo it not displayed, but xine freezes again before first DVD menu/frame. When xine is started with 'xv' as output, then it works until vdpau is chosen and freezes immediately after selection of VDPAU from 'VO' menu.
But contrary to wantilles (below) experience, mplayer works properly even in VDPAU mode (mplayer version 1.0_rc4_p20101014).

hi,

I tryed disabling the OSD, in the config of xine
.xine/config

# Enable OSD support
# bool, default: 1
gui.osd_enabled:0

With this i can start xine, but when i go to fullscreen the xine hang, but you can try this setting, for see the behaviour,

my cents
