Exclamation Black screen after installing Nvidia drivers on Ubuntu 10.10

The exact problem I face is that as soon as I install the Nvidia recommended drivers using the "Hardware Driver Manager", I restart the system but it never gets past the login splash screen. After I log in it simply goes to a black screen and sits like this indefinately. I can hear the login sound but there is no image. The suggested driver from Ubuntu repositories is: 260.19.06

My GPU: Nvidia Gforce 8400GS 256MB RAM PCIe Ubuntu Maverick 10.10
Monitor: LG Flatron 1953s 19"

anyone to hep?
thanks!

Please ask at http://ubuntuforums.org/ - it seems like you have a problem with your Ubuntu, not with NVIDIA driver (if you see the login manager window then NVIDIA drivers work).

Screen is ALL BLACK (no login manager window) only sounds can be heard, and its a problem with Nvidia driver no doubt, thanks for at least replying. By the way it happen with the same driver when I try to install it to the previous ubuntu version (10.04), so there is no Ubuntu problem, its Nvidia driver 260.19.06 and higher problem.

That implied that you saw the login manager and could log in

Then follow the forum rules and attach nvidia-bug-report.

Sorry did you read what I have written? I CANīT SEE anything, the screen is ALL BLACK what I suppose I must see? I only see a black screen. You are trying to say that I can see something when the truth is that there is nothing to see in my screen, nothing no login even a cursor, so? I will attach the Nvidia-bug-report.

You can try switching to a text console (Ctrl + Alt + F1-F7) and run nvidia-bug-report from there

If that doesn't work, try SSH'ing into your computer, then try to run it.

And if even that doesn't work, run with whatever driver is working for you and run this script.

I think this is probably not an Ubuntu issue because there is a similar thread on the arch linux forums:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic....845255#p845255

atari is your problem with the 64-bit driver?

I am running arch linux x86_64 with the nvidia-256.53-1-x86_64 driver on a GeForce 8400 GS card. When I start X, my monitor reports "Cable disconnected" When I look at the terminal output it appears that x has started and gnome is running. there are no xorg errors.

I can use the nouveau driver. On the arch forums, some users report that they can fix the issue by rolling back to the previous driver.

I am having difficulties with Nvidia Geforce 8400M GS on Arch Linux. I cannot activate compositing on KDE as the system settings claim that the card does not support compositing. I think this problem may be localised to the 8400 series of cards.

sorry, I cut and pasted the wrong driver into my previous post. it's nvidia-260.19.12-1-x86_64 that is giving me trouble.

I am also experiencing this problem with Nvidia GeForce 8300 GS. The screen just says "no input signal" and goes to sleep.

The software is all running normally: i.e. I goto to TTY1 and have to ctrl-c to kill X, then the monitor wakes back up.

I have tried 260.19.12 and 260.19.21

EDIT: Also using 64-bit
