Screen corruption and hard lock-up with anything >180.60 on 8400M GT

Hello,

After various software upgrades (including nvidia drivers), I've run into the following issue: right after logging in, after a few seconds I get screen corruption, see:

and, depending if I'm fast enough or not, I either manage to switch to ctrl-alt-f1 and stop X, or the system freezes (nothing works except a hard reset after that).

Last working version was 180.60, which doesn't have this problem. Anything after 180.60 causes this problem.

laptop: sony vaio vgn-ar41e
video card: 8400M GT
kernel: tried both 2.6.30 and 2.6.33
xorg: tried 1.6.5 and 1.7.5

Hi, I'm very interested in your post, as I have the exact same issue with my 9800GT, same screen corruption patterns and same lockup. I run Ubuntu 9.10. My cards been working perfectly for just under one and a half years, that is until I installed driver 195.36.15 (the 'fixed' driver). I saw the warnings over 195.36.08 and avoided it, but on the 15th of March (a few days ago), I saw on this forum the fixed driver had been released, and downloaded via FTP, and today on the 19th I started a game 10 minutes into it this corruption (same as OP), followed by a freeze occurred. Now I wonder if you installed this new one (195.36.15) to try same as I did?. I returned back to the Ubuntu default proprietary driver, same thing, screen corruption and my PC freezes. To test more I booted into Windows 7, using the older driver (196.21), few seconds after the desktop appears same thing, corrupted and freezes my PC. So in effect my 9800GT is dead, I used this card for quite a while (1 1/2 years almost), and within days of trying the 'fixed' driver my card fails?, something needs looking into here, and I'm just warning others to watch out.

I always keep my eye on my temps, and did notice my card getting hotter than usual (74 C)with 195.36.15, but I just assumed as the weather is warming up its nothing to worry about, but when I think about my temp was hitting 74 and 'sticking' to that number, my temp usually fluctuates, from 57-62 during gaming.

If this driver has damaged my card how do I go about getting a replacement?.

Peaceseeker, can you please start a different thread for your issue; the screen corruption may have the same appearance, but in eaglexro's case it is reversible by installing a different driver, so it is almost certainly not the same issue.

eaglexro, does the screen corruption appear if you take a screenshot with software, instead of with a camera? (for example, by using the "Print Screen" button)

Also, not sure if this helps, but: one thing I noticed now while trying to get a screenshot before hard locking, after switching a few times from ctrl-alt-f1 to X and vice-versa, screen corruption didn't seem to trigger anymore (only left it a few minutes tho, but it usually happens in the first 30s).

Are you running a compositing desktop manager? Could you try disabling it and see if the problems still appear?

Also, try disabling the composite extension itself in xorg.conf.

It would be useful to know if the issues only appear when composite is enabled/being used.

In case it might help debugging, 173.14.28 seems to be working, although with some (noticeable) degraded 2D performance, especially in firefox.

Also tried 260.19.12, which doesn't work.

Am I really the only person with this problem?

I had the same issue plus screen artifacts watching videos with mplayer or vlc with openSUSE 11.3 and 260.19.12 drivers.
I downgraded to 256.53 and the problems are solved.
