Default Newly installed 96.43.19 driver won't work

Help! I just installed the new 96.43.* driver that was released a few days ago. the installation said that it was complete. Now when I boot Ubuntu, the splash screen shows, then some screen with text flashes about 5-7 times. Then I see a tty1 screen with "yo2boy login" or something. HELP!!! Why wont it boot properly???

Bump.

I've attached some logs for some details on my problem:

Thanks for the reply conky. Anyway, I've blacklisted nouveau and it seems to have fixed the boot problems. Now ubuntu loads correctly. But, now when I want to enable 3D effects, the "Extra effects" option won't do anything.

The 96.43.* series is old enough that its support for 32-bit GLX visuals with alpha is a little bit off, so you have to manually enable it with the AddARGBGLXVisuals option (see the entry for it here.

I have a similar problem. I am running Kubuntu 10.10 on Compaq Deskpro EN with NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X. I tried both 96.43.18 & 19 and both exhibit the same temporary lockup for 20-30 seconds problem. It also shows some random graphics rendering. When I remove xorg.conf file, everything works but no 3D acceleration and Google World doesn't recognise the graphics driver. Attached are my files. I appreciate you help with this issue.

Thanks,

-Abe

Your nvidia-bug-report isn't complete. There are some informations, but search how to make properly log.
Maybe too many combinations in your xorg.conf, Xorg -configure,... Please remove your xorg.conf and reinstall NVIDIA driver, then generate it again with:
Code:
sudo nvidia-xconfig

I already did that with both 96.43.18 & 19 and I just did it again as you requested in case I made any inadvertent mistakes, the problem persisted.

To generate nvidia-bug-report I used nvidia-bug-report.sh. It was successful and I didn't expect any errors in the report since the installation went smoothly and without any errors either. I will "startx --logverbose 6" and try running the shell script next time to get as much info as possible and post them.

Attached are the new files, If you have experience with nVidia drivers, I suggest you look in the new-xorg.0.log file. It has errors at the end which explains why I am having intermittent lock ups. Keep in mind that, when I totally remove /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, I don't experience any lock ups, performance is pretty good, but don't have 3D acceleration either. I am not sure what driver is getting loaded and being used and when I run "Google Earth", it can't determine the graphics driver either.

Thanks,
-Abe

Edited: I did the "startx -- -logverbose6" and the results in nvidia-bug-report.log were the same as before. See new file at end of attachment list.

You should have the file: nvidia-bug-report.log.gz in your home folder.
Show output of "dmesg" command else.
(96.43.18 is incompatible with X.org server 1.9)
To many errors, but like X-es does not start on nvidia this may be the KMS and a framebuffer problem. Try to add options to kernel line like:
vga=791 (supported framebuffer of course)
vga=normal
Option: nomodeset too.

Wait for NVIDIA, probably this is a xorg 1.9 bug but with KMS of intel, nouveau, radeon - disable KMS in kernel (nomodeset).

I have this warning too, but everything works.

This may be a hardware problem, e.g. with the radiator but gart is initializing.

I posted nvidia-bug-report.log already and nothing in it even with -logverbose 6 option.

Attached is the output of "dmesg"

I tried all option, individually and combined, but none made a difference.

Yes, it could be bug(s) some where and I was hoping nVidia could locate them.

We never know, but I doubt it is a hardware problem since I don't experience any when /etc/X11/xorg.conf file is removed.

Thanks for your efforts in trying to help.
