There's no doubt Nvidia rushed Fermi to market. It had to have something to compete with Cypress. Instead of a full-fledged GF100, we got a stripped down GPU so Nvidia could put it in the market. It's noisy, power-hungry and not much faster than the HD 5870. I agree that it is a much better card than the truly disastrous FX 5800. You will recall that Nvidia "fixed" that card with the FX 5900 Ultra. Nvidia has done the same thing with the GTX 580. Nvidia likes to release high-end cards that are not ready and then replace them with "fixed" versions. ATI did this with the HD 3xxx series.

Wasn't that the HD 2900 XT that was the terribad card from ATI? The 3xxx was a die shrink, and the 4xxx was the "fixed" version.

The 480 is an awesome card. I average about 70 on load, and to me it isn't much louder than the 5870 I had. I don't have to deal with ATI's crap hardware or drivers which is the biggest plus. The performance difference between the 580 and 480 is not enough for me to justify spending so much money for one. My 480 is only 4 months old, and it does everything I ask it to do at excellent framerate and IQ.
I'll save my money for a real upgrade, thanks!

I LOVE my 580, super nice temps, great FPS, and I can actually run BFBC2 on high with AFx4 at great frames. The only thing I noticed is that I think I've reached my CPU/Mem/Mobo as a bottleneck. Which sucks because my next upgrade is going to be pretty freakin expensive what ever way you look at it...

Also, the 1090T is NOT a bottleneck. If it is, you ain't overclocking that sucker enough. ![]() EDIT: wait, why is your Q9550 your primary? That 1090T is beastly on BC2. Seriously, get that GTX 580 on your Phenom II 1090T rig, and watch your framerates in BC2 soar! ![]()

Meh. Not all give a damn about power/heat/noise.
Some of us are enthusiast and care about performance/performance/performance, and don't mind building a case around the GPU solution. BTW- I had an FX5800, and you cannot compare the fan noise of that card to the fan noise of a GTX480. It's not even close, the FX5800 did sound like a hairdryer in your case. It's pretty doubtful NVIDIA would offer a card with similar noise again as people still talk about it all of these years later. http://www.anandtech.com/show/4008/n...rce-gtx-580/17 Notice the .5db noise difference between a GTX480 and a HD5970? Ever seen a thread "OMG! The HD5970 is too loud!" even though the HD5970 has exactly the same noise?

480 isn't a bad card card at all. In addition if you own one and are running it @ 821 on the core you're darn close to 580 performance in a lot of things.
