http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-400-_-Product $209.99 shipped AMIR for a GTX470. This card is faster than a 6870, has more proprietary features by far. The cheapest 6870? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-909-_-Product $262 shipped So how is costing 25% more, having less features, being slower making a 6870 the "winnar by a country mile" NP? Just looks like ATi can't compete to me, and I didn't even mention the much cheaper GTX460 FTW edition that reviewers said was all around better than the 6870: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130575 So how do I back up what I said? http://www.anandtech.com/show/3987/a...ange-market/21 Quote:

This is what can happen when you have Crossfire enabled without a proper driver profile present. It could be missing or broken. This includes dual GPU cards like the 5970 that use Crossfire tech.
![]() Source: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/vid..._10.html#sect3 Yes, you can turn off Crossfire and get single GPU performance. Also in that title Crossfire is not needed for decent performance. However if that was a title where you needed two GPUs for decent FPS with maxed settings you'd be out of luck, or have to turn settings down. I'm not sure if the option to switch off Crossfire exists on the 5970 in current drivers. You use to be able to basically accomplish that by unchecking Cat AI in the CCC. I've used single GPU, SLi and Crossfire across a few generations. As far as reliability, stability and solid support, it goes; single GPU, SLi, then Crossfire.

The "much more expensive" FTW editiion costs $227.55 shipped, which is still much less than the cheapest 6870 on Newegg. So a person trying to buy a video card today at newegg can buy one of these faster, less expensive NVIDIA cards, or they can buy a slower, more expensive 6870. Even the cheapest out of stock 6870 costs more than either of these cards. And the GTX460 FTW is cooler and quieter than a 6870. You're right, AnandTech took some "flak" from ATi fans for including that card in their review, because ATi fans didn't want people to know there are less expensive, cooler, quieter, faster alternatives to the 6870. I checked the stock status the day that review went up, the day the explanation of why they included it went up, yesterday, and today. It was always in stock, so apparently that card is a valid alternative for people to purchase. So where is the "lie"? I may be a "NVIDIA fan" but I've backed what I've said with links to prices and independent tests of performance. Not to mention the reviews of the 6870 were done with drivers that have been shown to lower image quality to raise performance. You seem to dismiss this, but my guess is that if NVIDIA's drivers were shown to be the same you would be more concerned.

I thought my GTX 480s were the best cards I ever owned. I just sold them because I upgraded to GTX 580s. Apparently a lot of people think poorly of the GTX 480 though as I lost $200 a card, each of which were only 3 months old. Mine were even Superclocked cards from EVGA. I think the reputation of those cards is undeserved. Noise and heat were never issues for me. Although I'm sure power in high demand.

These days they usually come in a distant second, declare something like "profitability" the defining factor, and then give interviews about how they "won".
