GTX 480: Worst GeForce card ever?

I think the FX 5800 was Nvidia's only card ever released that had almost no shelf time. It seemed like they released the FX 5800, and then about 24 hours later, they released the FX 5900 and discontinued the 5800. The GTX 480 was no where near the abysmal quality that the FX 5800 was plagued with. The GTX 480 actually played games pretty well, even though the chip was crippled.

I honestly think the only failure that was worse than the FX 5800 card was the cooler on the card... jet turbine anyone?

You're right, it isn't as good...it's better. In fact, regular Surround is even better. Hell, even all the reviewers who panned the Fermi when it came out admit that it's better, including Kyle from HardOCP who was a raving Eyefinity fanboy said that "NV Surround gaming with GTX 480 SLI will give you the best gaming experience you have ever had." Surround works better, it scales better, it's just better all around.

Since you were mentioning gimmicks, six screen Eyefinity should have made your list, because that's all it is. No one uses it.

I've yet to see any gamer using Eyefinity with six screens, and even if someone did they certainly wouldn't be doing it with a single card. Even further, the setups I've seen from reviewers don't come close to a surround setup in immersion due to think ass bezels everywhere, which even with bezel correction don't go away...in 3D they do, or at least you can see right through them due to the way 3D works with it.

One has to admit the shelf life or end of life for the 480 came rather quick. Which in the end became a good thing due to the 580 being significantly better. I look at the 470/480 as a stop gap measure until Fermi was refined more, another good thing. As for how the 580 will look once AMD releases the 6970, who knows? I expect it to perform better but what do I know.

As for 3d on ATi or AMD, 3rd party support is IZ3D which I've been playing with for about a week with an IZ3D monitor (discontinued in manufacturing) for $129 from Newegg. Good and bad in this case and having alot of fun. Some games are great others, like 3d Vision not.

The 5870 has been a great card for me, I also have to say from all my time owning video cards both Nvidia and ATi, the least amount of driver problems, hassels and good frequent updates etc. has been this round with ATi now AMD named only. Of course just a single GPU viewpoint. My Raddy will also do 1050mhz/1250 all day and night, love it when folks compare OC to non OC cards but that is something else.

As for the GTX 480 being the worst GeForce card ever, shortest lived maybe (not!, the 5800 was canned even more quickly) I say is not the case. There good performing cards with some kickass performance still.

Bah!, I really don't want to argue about it anymore. There are advantages and disadvantages to both solutions, and for you to try and add fuel to the fire after someone has asked for the bickering to stop says a lot about your character.

As Slytat said, it's time for this thread to be laid to rest. It started out as somewhat of a joke has evolved into a miniature flame fest, and we simply do not need more drama from an AMD vs. Nvidia fan debate.

Nah the biggest failure cards in history was everything that went up against the original Voodoo chipset based cards. As a matter of fact most where called 3D Decelerators (excuse the spelling) I had an original Orchid Voodoo 1 card and Quake 3D was the most impressive thing I had ever seen on a PC at the time. Man those cards rocked.

Actually the 5800 was outperformed by the 9700Pro, by quite a bit when AA or DX9 were used. It was easily ATi's biggest victory over NVIDIA, which is why ATi fans still bring it up, seven years later.

What they don't mention in doing so is that ATi didn't even design the 9700Pro. ATi purchased a company called "ArtX" that had a good GPU design and then used it for their next two generations of products. I believe the next card ATi designed was the 2900XT.

Also, enough about the heat. Where were all these people whining about heat when the 8000 series came out? Those cards are still universally praised and they ran MUCH hotter at idle and about the same at load.

Yes, low noise and temps compared to GTX480 with better performance.

If that's true then that's absolutely hilarious. Their huge victory was simply bought and the card they did design failed miserably
