Question GFX Card Choice!

I'm looking to buy a new gfx card that must be capable of 4K x 4K textures, I can't seam to find any resources online, and maximum texture size appears to be pretty much undocumented!

Any specs for all the different chipsets in the NV range would be very useful, or if people could check what ther cards are capable of..

I am fairly sure the current nvidia cards can. I just did a quick check and made a 4096x4096 window on my program, which copies the screen buffer to textures and then renders them back and it didnt give any errors. This is on a Quadro FX1000, but I dont think there is any reason why cards should differ. You probably want one with 256MB RAM though... whats it for?

I'm converting an app from an Onyx IR that involves lots of subloading to areas of the texture, I could split the geometry up and use smaller textures, but then the arbitrary subloading gets messy...

I'm testing on a GeForce4 Go 440 (Dell Latitude laptop) and it max's out at 2K x2K
Theoreticly I have enough texture memory (64MB) for the raw RGB image which is 48MB.
I'm looking at getting a cheap card GeFroce FX 5600 with 128/256MB RAM, it looks good on paper, but I don't want to shell out money if it is not 4K capable.. Unfortunately a Quadro FX card is a little out of budget while the app is still unproven...

A quick test would be:

GLint size;

glGetIntergv( GL_MAX_TEXTURE_SIZE, &size);


A better test would be to use a proxy texture, code would be something like:

GLint width, height;

glTexImage2D( GL_PROXY_TEXTURE_2D, 0, GL_RGB8, 4096, 4096, 0, GL_RGB, GL_UNSIGNED_BYTE, NULL );

glGetTexLevelParameteriv( GL_PROXY_TEXTURE_2D, 0, GL_TEXTURE_WIDTH, &width );
glGetTexLevelParameteriv( GL_PROXY_TEXTURE_2D, 0, GL_TEXTURE_HEIGHT, &height );

ok, on the 5600 those return 4096 and 4096x4096 so I guess thats the answer. Same on quadro.

cant quite work out the difference, does one have video in? All these model numbers get confusing... I would just buy the cheapest one with 256MB and see if it is fast enough for your application. Memory bandwidth is fairly low on the 5600s, so it depends what you are doing with your 4k texture.
