Default this vs that

Intel® Core™ i5 760 - 2.80GHz Quad Core, Socket 1156, 8MB L3, Intel DMI Interface, 45nm, x64 Support, Intel VT, 3 Year Warranty

vs

AMD® Phenom™II X6-1055T - 2.80GHz Six Core, Socket AM3, 9MB, HyperTransport Bus, 45nm, AMD64 Support, 3 Year Warranty

Both are basically the same price here in South Africa and for argument's sake, assume I can't consider any other models. Which would you choose?

Depends on what you do, games the Core i5, heavy multi-tasking video/audio encoding the x6. Although the x6 is the same price once you add the motherboard you will find the AMD system becomes cheaper.

In games that can take advantage of more cores (like bfbc2) the x6 will be faster, that being said the 750 will be faster most of the time.

Why not get Sandy Bridge?

It's hard for me to not recommend an x6.

But that i5 will be quicker in some games... although from what I've read over the last 10 months or so, in general use x6 rigs just feel a bit more snappy/robust during general use.

Plus there's the overclocking factor... yeah, I know i5s OC nicely as well, but hey, 6 cores at 4ghz? That be pimp!

If i had to buy now, I would get AMD® Phenom™II X6-1055T plus AM3+ motherboards. It supports the AMD Bulldozer upgrade.

EDIT
My mistake, the AM3+ Motherboards are still not released. Back to the drawing board.
Anyway with only the 2 option for upgrade you choose, I would get the 6 core.

760 is easy to OC with little risk and will crush the AMD proc.
