Default Re: VDPAU Problems with Mythbuntu on ION

before the 260 some people had the problem of the video to stop and then speedup and continue to run every few minutes/twice an hour or something like that. This is gone since 260. What you are referring to is most likely complete freezes.

I'm distribution developer not software developer. So i can not help on fixing something. What i can do is to put the problems we get reported to be visible also here. There are also some lenghty discussion over at vdr-portal.de about this. Until now no other real workaround, then to rollback to some other version (whatever fits you best, i guess 256 for ION2/G(T)2x0 195.30 for ION/8x00/9x00

i'm trying 195.36 at the moment - later maybe also 256 - not sure yet what i want to keep. Fixed 260 would be prefered.

Again sorry for highjacking - i just could not see "Can you please try the latest 260.* driver from the FTP site? " uncommented and wanted to get frustration from "our" users in here as well ...

I haven't played with this much, but just enough to discover that, for me, Mythtv is unusable on the Ubuntu-10.10 GNOME desktop, but works perfectly (silky smooth 1080p on Adv/2x) on the Mythbuntu 10.10 desktop.

This is with the latest released NVIDIA 260.* driver, on my Zotac HD-ID11 Ion2 system.

YMMV.

Hi, I'm having the same issue running mythtv. System is an Zotac Ion ZBOXHD-ID11. I'm running a minimal Ubuntu 10.10 install booting from NFS. Nvidia driver is 260.19.06

When playing any video I either see the video lock, or blank completly. Only way to fix is a reset. My myth output is:

Does Mythtv play any of the video, or does it always fail immediately like that ?

Have you tried booting the box with pci=nomsi on the kernel options line?

EDIT: from your other thread, it appears you have tried this already.

I recently attempted a fresh 10.10 Mythbuntu install on a spare drive for a fully-working Intrepid-based mythtv machine here. Very poor playback until I disabled "composite" in the xorg.conf file.

In VDPAU the video playback fails right away. If I disable VDPAU it works well, with some slight tearing. I believe I have disabled composite, but I will try and verify this again. I wonder if maybe there is permission problem with the mythtv user on my system? Is there a specific device file that VDPAU needs access to?

Default [SOLVED] VDPAU Problems with Mythbuntu on ION

OK I figured out how to fix this. I was using the default Ubuntu 10.10 nvidia-current drivers. I read that other people were having problems with these drivers, and recommend using the direct Nvidia installer. The next best thing was to try the drivers in the X-Updates PPA.

Solution: Upgrade nvidia driver from the 10.10 maverick repo to the X-Updates PPA versions

Run the following commands or directly edit /etc/apt/sources.list:

Code:
apt-add-repository 'http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates/ubuntu maverick main'
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
After this I rebooted. The very first time with the new drivers, the video froze after 5 sec, but since then it has been working fine. The first lock up might have been my HD signal. Hope this helps someone in the future.

Some detailed info here: http://readlist.com/lists/mythtv.org...35/177930.html

Good! Here's another tip:

The default vdpaubuffersize (number of buffers allocated) is too small in MythTV, especially for the HD-ID11 box. Increase this to 42 or so, and it will handle higher bitrate playback much better.

Eg. Add this option to the Custom Filters line on the second screen of the VDPAU playback profile:

vdpaubuffersize=42

Also, in the same VDPAU playback profile, increase the permitted number of CPUs from the default of 1 (one) to 2 (two).

Cheers

Oh, and I find that playback is silky smooth without vdpauhqscaling enabled, but gets jerky (mostly for playback of OTA recordings) when I turn that on. So I leave it off on the HD-ID11 box.

HQScaling with vdpau increases Gpu load and might be too much for the GT218 if it is HD material, SD should be ok though.
