Does it give you a tty, or a black screen? at what point does it freeze (assuming you've tried startx through a console, it should give output if something goes wrong, or check Xorg.0.log in /var/log/)
To make sure you're using the nvidia driver, try running this script:
http://forlong.blogage.de/entries/pages/Compiz-Check
(it's meant for checking compiz compatibility but I use it as a simple stats tool as well, easier than manually checking the xorg log)

I'm having problems with nvidia myself, but if your problem is a normal one, I may be able to help. My problems are gargantuan. (ok not quite)

Oh, and what method did you use to install the drivers? Module-assistent? Or the downloadable one from the nvidia site? Or did you just install the appropriate packages?

(sorry if thats too many questions lol)

thanks,
NinjaNumberNine

Yet another two things: what's your desktop environment, and do you have a xorg.conf? I was just told to day that the latest version of Xorg does not need a xorg.conf file and that it could in some cases cause a console login it one existed. (maybe I'll find the link soon)

This seems to be common to all the VAIO screens, see
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=155218
and the last pages of
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=154563
It happens to me as well with a Vaio VPCS11C5E, the screen goes black as soon as I fire startx (actually, it may be even worse on mine since the EDID problem of Sony displays was never fixed for Vaio S). I tried reporting the bug, but for some strange reasons my startx - --logverbose 6 does not report information it should. If you could look into the first link and follow AaronP suggestion you might give devs useful logs

Cheers, Alessandro

right after startig X, the screen turns black, backlight is still on and it's not possible to switch to another virtual console.
I can't find any hint in the xorg.0.log (appended) and compitz is 'unable to open display '' '
I've tried the binary-driver-installation and the download from http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-d...12-driver.html whithout any difference.
External VGA didn't wake up monitor.

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nomodeset" and adding Option /proc/acpi/video/IGPU... didn't have any effect

thanks,
Klaus

first sorry if bad English, i am from Germany

I have the same Problem on my new DELL XPS 17 with i5 540 and the GT 435M

I used sudo apt-get install nvidia-current for Installation

After booting with the Ubuntu Live-CD i delete the xorg.conf on my Hard-disk and the Display shows the known Desktop. Before Installation of the Driver there was no xorg.conf on the System.

Are there now some News ??

Greetings from Germany

Hardy

@NinjaNumberNine

I tried the script here: http://forlong.blogage.de/entries/pages/Compiz-Check and it say:

More than one graphics chip detected -- sorry, the script can not handle that. Aborting.

Are there any news ???

THX and Greetings
