Default Opengl Problems on 3 display / 2 GTX260 system

Hi All.

Been trying to solve a nagging issue and curious if anyone has seen this before.

First off: The system

I'm running a 3 display / 2 graphics card setup, using a pair of GTX 260's.

The displays are 24" displays. (same model for all 3)

It's running Ubuntu 10.04, Kernel: 2.6.32-27, Nvidia Drivers: 260.19.29

The Problem:

Various opengl applications will pause or freeze when my mouse/pointer re-selects the window.

To clarify; if I have glxgears and gimp running, and I select gimp, glx-gears continues to run
without any issues. However when I select the glxgears window, glxgears pauses or freezes.
As soon as I select another window, be it gimp, xterm, etc, glxgears un-pauses and continues to run.

I've noted that if I grab the paused glxgears-window and move it, the application starts working again.

From general observation, I'm starting to suspect that perhaps the issue is xinerama related, since if
I downgrade to either a dual-display (1 video card (Monitor 1 / Monitor 2)) or single-display,
the issue disappears.

(SEE MONITOR ATTACHMENT)

Recently (as in 12/27/2010), after upgrading to the latest Nvidia driver, I noted that if I have glxgears and
gimp running in either monitor 1 or 2, the issue doesn't occur. However if glxgears is on Monitor3, and gimp
in either Mon1 or Mon2, the problem again presents itself.

I've attached the nvidia debug file for more detailed specs.

Thanks everyone.

Hi!

There are a number of cave-eats with multi-GPU/multi-monitor setups with
nvidia consumer cards on Linux. So unless you can spare the money for two
Quadro cards in order to deploy SLI Mosaic, you may like to look into purchasing
a Matrox TH2G: in your log output, I can see that you are using 3x 1680x1050,
right? In this case, it should be possible to configure your two 260GTX cards
for SLI mode and then operate the three LCDs through the SLI single output
via the TH2G. However, in this mode the you will only get 57Hz (I was told
this might be an issue for certain video-related applications). If you strictly
need 60Hz, then you can configure the TH2G for dual head operation, then
run one LCD trough the first video output of the first video card and the other
two LCDs through the second output of the first video card via the TH2G.
This works even up to 3 x 1920x1200 (60Hz). However this renders the
second video card useless (unless you want to deploy a multi-seat setup).

Talking Re: Opengl Problems on 3 display / 2 GTX260 system (SOLVED)

Hello Bernhard,

Thank you very much for the reply and in-debt information. I like the idea of using the Matrox TH2G, however spending more money isn't an option for me, esp since this setup originally worked when I was running 8.04.

As odd as it sounds, I managed to solve the issue from a posting I noticed about somewhat similar problems with using "LeftOf" as opposed to "RightOf".

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1473113

Just for the fun of it, I changed the following:

Screen "Screen1" LeftOf "Screen0"
to
Screen "Screen1" RightOf "Screen0"

After a Xserver restart and cable swap-around, my problem disappeared!! o_0

Either way, thank you again for the solution.

With multi-GPU setups you always have to pray that the next driver/kernel/OS update
won't break anything! Since there are way less problems with a single GPU setup, I
opted to purchase the TH2G(s), but YMMV :-)
