Going to put one together for a buddy, been out of the loop for a bit..
Right now I'm thinking Intel 950 with the Asus saber x58 EVGA 580 OC for the card Any thought/suggestions for a build like this? Cooler, ram, HD etc... Trying to get him the best bang for the buck and stay within his $2000 budget. Thanks! |

Just my 2 cents , but the 1356 socket is dead in the water, personally i would go AM3 and 6 core Phenom, there's a lot of life in that format.Buldozer will be a long fairly soon , so the upgrade path is taken care of for some time.
Even Sandy bridge seems to be a waste of time unless you are going to chuck the chip into a laptop. What else is the point of an onboard Graphic chip. Anyone with a gaming rig is going to Install a decent graphics card. Amd is my recommendation. |

Decent build clawbear has. I'd probably change most of what's on there though.
That and he's missed a CPU cooler. Might need to get one of those as well...I need to see if any brackets for the TRUE will fit LGA1155 as a side note. EDIT: Here is something that I'd probably build right now with $2k. Still needs a case and heatsink though. I'd probably pick up the HSF from elsewhere. ![]() |

you should probably go sandy bridge if you are building from scratch, imo.

I went with what he told me. Also, he never said overclocking so stock cooler is fine. Again, I just went within his guidelines.

an unlocked HD 6950 then add another in 6 months or halfway through his "usual" graphics card upgrade cycle.
