Angry increasing resolution

all i want to do is increase my screen res
i'm running a p4 2.4 256mb ram with a prolink geforce fx 5200 128 mb vram
nvidia installer 4496 installed fine
the default res is 1024x768
however i want to run in 1152x864. i have a dell es-17 monitor. in windows this res works fine
however, on using the display manager or editing the xf86config file to include "1152x864", the xserver starts with the nvidia splash ( a bit out of view, i need to adjust the centering, etc) and then there are only horizontal lines and a grey summat across the screen.
can anyone help, or point me to a relevant thread?
i will include my log files if needed

You probably need to take a look at your XF86Config.0.log, which is (on redhat) in /var/log.

For instance, on startup, these files are generated (on my box):

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 38736 Nov 23 13:39 /var/log/XFree86.0.log
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 31329 Nov 23 13:38 /var/log/XFree86.1.log

They'll have lines in them marked as WW (warnings) or EE (errors) -- which may explain more on why you're not able to startup X.
